2Who are we?
Waste Watch is a leading UK environmental charity
promoting sustainable resource use. Waste Watch
campaigns through policy development for all
areas of society to reduce, reuse and recycle
whilst working on changing attitudes and
behaviour through projects and services.
3Whats our history?
- Established in 1987 by National Council for
Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) - Voice for voluntary sector recycling
organisations - Provided information, communication and education
about recycling - Waste Watch is based in London and employs 40
skilled and enthusiastic staff

5How we educate
- Waste Watch is involved in education in a number
of different ways - Through the communications work of its
consultancy - Through its regional education team

- Provides specialist communications consultancy at
national, - regional and local level to a variety of clients
including - Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP)
- WRAP ROTATE team (delivers local authority
support) - Defra WIP LASU contracts
- Local authorities
- Waste management companies
- All projects, however varied in approach, share a
common - theme of communicating and, therefore, educating
the public - about recycling

- WRAP Recycle Now consultancy support
- Deliver strategic consultancy support on national
Recycle Now campaign about its current and future
direction - Manage the Recycle Now brand
- - Advise on brand guidelines and correct
implementation - - Hold and maintain the image library, a local
authority resource - Produce fortnightly e-zines which bring the
campaign news to the local authorities - Website support

9Communications Best Practice
- Production of Toolkits and Guidance Documents for
WRAP - Developing Recycling Communications Campaigns
A Practical Toolkit, aimed at recycling officers
in local authorities - The Real Nappy Campaign Resource Pack, aimed
at local authorities - Researched and developed a best practice guidance
document Engaging Black and Minority Ethnic
Communities in Recycling Activity - All are available in hard copy and are also on
the WRAP website
10Local communications for localauthorities
- London Borough of Barking and Dagenham
- Undertook a communications audit and created a
communications strategy - Implementing a two year recycling communications
campaign - Surrey County Council
- Event management including annual County Show,
roadshows and supermarket events. Theme was waste
minimisation - Campaign monitoring and evaluation
- Royal Borough of Kingston
- Launch events to promote a new estates recycling
scheme to residents.
11Local communications
- Bracknell, Reading Wokingham Re3 local
authorities - Waste Watch undertook
- Implementation of the newly created Re3 brand
- An integrated, medium-weight six week advertising
campaign - Further communications work included education
work, - door-stepping, training of local authority
officers and community engagement - Development of a communications strategy for the
subsequent two years

- Abitibi Consolidated
- Write and produce a bi-annual newsletter for
residents of Sefton Council promoting recycling
and reporting on their progress
14 Websites
- Waste Awareness Wales
- Development of websites to support the launch of
the new 'Recycle for Wales' campaign. - This included three fully bilingual websites
- - a consumer site to raise awareness and
recycling action - - a dedicated children's site to engage younger
users - - a partner's site to support local authority
use of the new brand. - All three sites designed to conform to AAA
accessibility standards making them accessible to
all users

16Door-stepping

- Door-stepping is an excellent method for
educating residents about recycling and proves
highly effective. - Teams talk to residents in a targeted area,
offering information, help and advice about local
services and answering any queries. - Door-stepping can also provide a fantastic
opportunity to undertake research with residents. - Waste Watch has recently undertaken door-stepping
projects in Hertfordshire, Westminster City
Council, London Borough of Ealing, Royal London
Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames.
