What is E-Commerce?
  • E-commerce means electronic business.
  • Break e-commerce down into e and business, and
    the definition is clear. E simply means anything
    done electronically, usually via the Internet.
    Business means business...that you already
    understand.
  • The e-commerce process explainedE-commerce is
    the means of selling goods on the Internet, using
    web pages.

History of E-Commerce
  • Started in the dot-com era (mid 90s)
  • Problematic in the beginning because of security
    concerns, the general public did not trust the
    internet.
  • As the internet became more popular businesses
    saw a potential for a whole new marketplace.

  • Census reports that retail e-commerce sales
    (B-to-C) in the United States increased to 21
    billion in the fourth quarter of 2004, up from
    17 billion in the fourth quarter of 2003, an
    increase of 22.3 percent.
  • The increase of total retail e-commerce sales
    between the year of 2004 and that of 2003 is 23.5
    percent.

    demands that all this be done on screen in a
    systematic process.

    passwords to increase the number of return
    buyers.
  • Offer online rebates, or free shipping to entice
    users.
  • Offer related items based a users previous
    purchases.

Know your audience
  • Sites for children should feature simple
    language, bright color scheme, and good
    metaphors.
  • Teenagers are going to want a cool looking
    homepage radical colors, flash pages, and
    interesting animations.
  • Some people just want a plain white looking page,
    with limited advertisement and direct access to
    desired content.

  • Baby Boomers are the largest growing e-commerce
    demography
  • Graphics use ALT HTML tags in case the picture
    cannot be displayed
  • Pop-up windows even the disabled hate these
  • Font size make sure the font is big, and the
    colors are easy to read.
  • Intervening pages try to limit splash pages, or
    have a way to skip them so that confused users
    can get directly to the good stuff.
  • Sounds do not rely on sounds to transmit
    information because users may be hearing impaired.

Most complaints involving e-commerce dont
concern the Web component of the deal. Its
usually the product itself or the delivery method
thats inadequate.

Future of E-Commerce
  • The future of e-commerce is almost certainly
    going to be prosperous
  • The rate of people engaged in e-commerce is
    sky-rocketing exponentially
  • Digital Markeplaces will continue revolutionize
    the way people shop.
  • May affect physical store locations. (i.e.
    NetFlixs effect on Blockbuster)
