Dissertation Express
  • 23 requests from Graduate Students
  • 11 requests from College of Education
  • 5 dissertations are Stanfords
  • 1970 to 2006 publication date
  • Majority purchased because non-circulating but
also for long-term loans, not on shelf, lost, in
process, no reason given, or not owned.

28
Dissertation Express
  • Advantages
  • 29 (cheaper rate than going through acquisitions
    or personal purchase)
  • 2-5 day turnaround time
  • Patron will get to keep copy
  • Not all dissertations are available from
    libraries
  • Increase fill rate

29
Dissertation Express
  • Disadvantages
  • Falls outside normal workflow
  • Policy/culture change from obtaining from another
library to actually purchasing on behalf of
    patron.
  • Billing issues (if you bill patrons and also
    paying invoices)
  • 29 may be more expensive than your maxcost

30
Netflix
  • UI has ordered 5 videos since February
  • 4 at a time for 23.99/month
  • Used in collaboration with our Media Services
    department
  • We track via ILLiad and have created a library
    address for Netflix
  • We place DVDs in non-labeled containers so users
    not clearly seeing from Netflix.

31
NetFlix
  • Advantages
  • Fast
  • Cheap, depending on subscription
  • User agreement okay for libraries
  • Due dates flexible, no overdues
  • Dont have to send out multiple requests via OCLC
    so saves staff time

32
Netflix
  • Disadvantages
  • Many titles, but focus is not entirely on
    scholarly works
  • How to handle lost item
  • Workflow change
  • Cost effective for academic library?
  • Tracking return envelope
