21Everyones Public Library
- City is focused on
- flu shots

- In a county with a large Spanish-speaking
population
22Need Statement
Everyones Public Library in Somewhere, NJ will
collaborate with the City Department of Health in
promoting flu shots, their benefits and where to
go to obtain free flu shots. The City saw a
higher percentage of flu cases in the last year
than neighboring counties saw.
23Needs Assessment
- The Everyones Public Library librarians asked
older adults on two successive Fridays, in a
paper-based, at-the-door survey, if they used the
internet for health information, what sites they
used and if they knew how to look up information
on flu shots. The results of the mini-survey
were 50 used the internet for health
information, 50 of the health information users
used a search engine for locating information and
most were unaware of how to use the internet to
find location information (location of flu shots).
24Identification of Target Population
Everyones Public Library is located in Union
County New Jersey, the 3rd most populous county
in New Jersey with native Spanish language
speakers, according to the 2000 census.
Everyones Public Library serves a city of
25,000 with a high percentage of older adults
(20 of the population). Previous library surveys
indicate that the older adult population uses the
library on average of once a week.

flu shot availability and where on the internet

HealthyNJ web site, particularly on locating flu

- The Library will host RML staff to teach the
class, From Snake Oil to Penicillin Evaluating
Consumer Health Information on the Internet for
seniors - The Library will give out promotional items and
written materials at the class and in prominent
locations in the Library promoting HealthyNJ and
flu shot information - The Library will promote its activities to
seniors and to the City Department of Health

Applications
- Purpose open a dialogue on community diversity
and serve as a model for other hospitals,
community health centers, public libraries that
wish to broaden their outreach, build strong
community partnerships and increase their
effectiveness in integrating diversity and
eliminating disparity in healthcare.
- Purpose to provide health professionals and
hospital staff with an educational and practice
opportunity to develop an awareness of health
literacy issues and improve communication skills
with individuals in the Valley region of MAR. It
will present practical information that will help
participants implement the new health literacy
requirements of JCAHO.
