• NSF received grant to evaluate potential for
  development of voluntary consensus standards

• A product that produces a smaller environmental
  footprint when compared to other competing
  products in the market
• (EO 13101, Section 201)

  Management System (PDP-EMS) to control the
  environmental impact of the product
• Continual improvement of PDP-EMS
• Ethics of pollution prevention and responsible
  energy use in the entire product life cycle
• Biodegradability, identification of PBT chemicals
  and risk assessment
• Does NOT itself set specific environmental and
  product performance criteria (does suggest such
  criteria)
• Enable manufacturer to formulate a PDP-EMS

Project Overview

• Project led by GreenBlue and funded by EPA Design
  for Environment (DfE)
• Multi-stakeholder approach involving formulators,
  raw materials manufacturers, industry
  associations, NGOs and EPA
• Develop positive lists of chemical ingredients
  based on EHS attributes and product
  functionality
• Provide broad access to industrial
  institutional cleaning products formulators to
  support informed choices
• NSF will provide compounds registration expertise
  for proprietary ingredients (NSF Green Book)

  (LEED) Green Building Rating System is a
  voluntary, consensus-based national standard for
  developing high-performance, sustainable
  buildings
• New construction and major renovation projects
  (LEED-NC)

LEED is Driving Product Development and
Certification

• Points for low emitting materials, paints,
  adhesives, sealants, etc. that support indoor air
  quality
• Points for environmentally preferable textiles,
  carpet, flooring and other building materials
• Points for green housekeeping products and
  practices for LEED EB.

EPA DfE Formulator Program

• Provide scientifically rigorous review by EPA
  experts of all ingredients based on currently
  available information, predictive models and
  expert judgment
• Ensure that the product contains only those
  ingredients that pose the least concern among
  chemicals in their class
