Going to College in the 21st Century
2
  • In this time of change, most new jobs are filled
by people with at least two years of college, yet
only about one in four students gets there. In
our high schools, we will fund early intervention
programs to help students at risk. We will place
a new focus on math and science. As we make
progress, we will require a rigorous exam before
graduation. By raising performance in our high
schools, and expanding Pell grants for low and
middle income families, we will help more
Americans start their career with a college
    diploma.

Economic Need for Higher Ed
  • Over 80 of 23 million new jobs created in next
10 years will require postsecondary education
  • Individuals with professional degrees pay more
than 18,000 more in annual taxes than H.S.-only
    graduates.
  • Jobs for dropouts and H.S. graduates are
    disappearing rapidly.

5
Impact of Inaction on Society
  • More than 12 of 25-34 age group w/o diploma
receive public assistance, compared to .4 with
    Bachelors Degrees
  • Poverty rate of college grads is only 2.
Families without H.S. diploma is 17.
    Single-mother families w/o diploma is 49.
  • Incarceration rate for H.S grads is 4 times that
of individuals with some college. It costs about
26,000 annually to care for a prisoner, about
the same as the per student cost at a public
    4-year university.
