Title: Fraternal Foundations Dont Just Give to Philanthropy
1Fraternal Foundations Dont Just Give to
Philanthropy
2Welcome to the Session WE ARE PHILANTHROPY!
- We talk about philanthropy a lot, but our members
rarely equate us as such. - Today were going to talk about getting back to
basics and focus on how we can engage the
heartstrings of our members, so they begin to see
us as a part of their overall charitable giving.
3Lets talk about why other causes tend to WIN
over us
- Kids with cancer vs. scholarships for sorority
girls - Support of the organizations signature
philanthropy - Focus on the Fraternitys grant and educational
initiatives - Tend to fall lower in our members philanthropic
priority lists - Others?
4How do Fraternal Foundations win and become a
priority to our donors?
- Well address the following today
- We have the 501c3 status, what really does this
mean and are we using it to the fullest
potential? - How to determine your priorities so that you
become a priority to your members - Tools to win how to become the organization
we all set out to be
5Why am I the expert?
- Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation The Journey
- In and out of involvement with our signature
philanthropy - Signature philanthropy began to win and
Foundation programs began to lose at risk
homeless kids or Theta Foundation which would
you choose? - The A-Ha Moment We had to claim it to aim it
6It started going back to the basics. What is
PHILANTHROPY?
- Greek for To Love Mankind
- The act of donating money, goods, services, time
and/or effort to support a socially beneficial
cause, with a defined objective and with no
financial or material reward to the donor - Voluntary promotion of human welfare and/or
giving by an individual or group to promote the
common good - QUESTIONS
- Do our members think these kinds of things when
they think about us? - Were often see more as the philanthropists
than we are the philanthropy
7501c3 Status. Are we using this to its fullest
potential?
- According to the IRS 501c3 means
- Charitable and educational
- Relief of the poor, the distressed, or the
underprivileged - Advancement of education or science
- Lessening the burdens of government and
neighborhood tensions eliminating prejudice and
discrimination defending human and civil rights
secured by law and combating community
deterioration and juvenile delinquency - QUESTION
- Are our donors thinking of us when they think of
these things?
8Dont worry, your didnt enter a compliance
session
- Were here to discuss how this relates to
- Image
- How you treat yourself as an organization
- How you talk to your donors
- How you develop your core purposes (Vision,
Mission and Values).
94 Points to Winning
- You have to know where youve been to know where
youre going. - You have to be in touch with your ritual and the
values that come with being a member of your
organization. The Foundation is a manifestation,
a tangible way to live values. - You have to have the feedback of your members and
supporters. Be relevant to todays needs. - You have to share the philanthropic value and end
result of what youre doing. How do your
programs help show Love to Mankind (insert your
definition of philanthropy here)
10You have to know where youve been to know where
youre going.
- Theta Case Study- pull the pieces from your
history that - will never change. Find that strong foundation
to build on. - united effort toward helping not only each other,
but also those outside - tax deductible and charitable gifts
- for those who do not have a local alum group
- the Theta way of linking human resources with
financial resources to make an impact on todays
needs - Thetas of all ages putting ideals in action by
helping human beings realize their fullest
potential - 100 cooperation from our members lending a hand
- investment in the future
Some concepts borrowed from Built To Last by Jim
Collins
11Ritual is everything.
- QUESTIONS
- What does your organization stand for?
- What values does the Foundation build its
principles on? - Thetas Answer
- We found it very easy to match the Fraternity
values that mirrored the purpose of our
existence - Highest scholarship
- Widest influence for good
- Love
12Dont just SAY you live your ritual, show your
members how you ARE your ritual.
- So, if every program we have falls in to one of
the three bucket - Highest scholarship
- Widest influence for good
- Love
- We cant just say that a program falls in to a
bucket or that we live our ritual or the
Foundation is a manifestation of our values.
We have to tell the story of how we bring
benefit to mankind and furthers charitable
educational initiatives as defined by the IRS.
If we start talking philanthropic and 501c3
language, then we become it. If you claim it,
you can aim it!
13Get feedback from your constituency.
- Keeps you relevant
- Many times your supporters say it better than you
can ours sure did - Theta should be an internationally renowned
organization providing service all around the
world. Sisters could work together in far away
places, expanding their horizons while spreading
the noble ideals of Theta to all they come in
contact with. - Theta should stand out from other sororities as a
premier group of outstanding women leaders of
tomorrow, poised to make a difference in our
world today.
14So, all in all, what did we research to best
align ourselves with PHILANTHROPY?
- History of the founding of the foundation. What
were the original goals and objectives, what was
timeless and what needed to be updated to address
todays needs. - A look back at various PR and development surveys
over the years (we had enough data, we didnt
conduct a new one). Pulled out compelling
thoughts and needs as it related to the
Foundation. - Ritual and values of the Fraternity. What do we
as Thetas stand for and how does that manifest
through our foundation do your programs fit in
values buckets?
15Old Theta Foundation Vision, Mission, Values
- Vision Kappa Alpha Theta is the organization
that provides the finest and most rewarding
membership experience. - Mission The Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation
strengthens and empowers members through
philanthropy and education. - Core Purpose Support members to learn, grow and
excel - Core Values Personal Excellence, Friendship /
Sisterhood, Scholarship, Service, Leadership - QUESTION
- Is this inspiring? Philanthropic (as weve
defined it)?
16It started to snowball when we asked ourselves
one question
- What would the Theta Foundation have to achieve
in order for us to not exist any more?
17Your Answers?
- Thetas Answer
- Every Theta would have access to every
opportunity, have all educational endeavors open
to her and never want for anything in her attempt
to make the world a better place.
18New Vision, Mission and Values
- Vision
- Giving every Theta every opportunity to make a
difference. - Mission
- Linking members with resources to help them
reach their fullest potential and make a
difference in the world. - Values
- Highest scholarship, widest influence for good
and love.
19The Second A-Ha Moment
- In the end, we realized that we are here to help
THETAS make the world a better place! It wasnt
our place to tell them what philanthropy to give
to, or what leadership program to attend, but
rather for them to share with us the skills they
need to accomplish THEIR dreams on the way to
changing the world and we are the resource that
is here to help them. - We decided, we ARE philanthropy.
20How Do We Communicate We Are Philanthropy
- In the past, we shared statistics
- Now, we tell stories
21In some case it takes a village, but sometimes it
only takes one Theta.
22How the shift in thinking has helped
- It helped define and clarify our purpose for our
members - It is easy to communicate and get whereas
before, folks only seemed to understand
scholarships - Some of the things our women are doing have
knocked our socks off why would we tell them
what to do when they have the expertise and
dreams of their own? - It has become a bit of litmus test for funding
criteria and scholarship applications. We
measure everything against our three values - It also allows us to stay relevant as the needs
of the world and its communities change
23Were more than a pass through to other
charities
- When given the resources, our members can make a
difference - Meet Allison
- Meet Anne
24Are these new programs?
- No, in fact, I think our trustees were surprised
to find out the kind of information we were
getting when we followed up with our scholarship
and grant recipients to see how they made a
difference. - We took the things weve always been doing and
share how they are now making a difference.
25In closing
- You have to know where youve been to know where
youre going. - You have to be in touch with your ritual and the
values that come with being a member of your
organization. The Foundation is a manifestation,
a tangible way to live values. - You have to have the feedback of your members and
supporters. Be relevant to todays needs. - You have to share the philanthropic value and end
result of what youre doing. How do your
programs help show Love to Mankind (insert your
definition of philanthropy here)
