boats leading into the 2008 Olympics.
Leo Thornley MSc. CSCS CEP is the Head Exercise
Physiologist and Sport Science Coordinator at

6SPEAKER
Dr. Stephen Norris
Presentation Practical Monitoring Systems This
session will focus on the rationale for
monitoring and the use and examples of practical
tools that can be used in real-life situations.
A critical element will be the emphasis upon
systems/tools that are inexpensive, require very
little time to do and interpret, and have minimal
impact upon the athlete and their
training/competition environment.
Stephen is currently the Director of Sport
Physiology Strategic Planning at the Canadian
Sport Centre Calgary where he focuses on winter
Olympic sports and acts as an advisor to Own the
Podium (the winter arm of Podium Canada
Canadas high performance sport agency). He is
also an adjunct assistant professor within the
Human Performance Laboratory at the Faculty of
Kinesiology, University of Calgary where he is a
member of the Altitude Research Group and the
Sport Physiology Group.
Stephens main role is working with national team
officials and coaches to devise and enact
programs that increase the likelihood of success
at international level competition. This often
requires an integrated multidisciplinary approach
utilizing expertise from several different areas
in order to support a given sports performance
objectives. Aside from this role, Steve also acts
as a graduate student advisor and committee
member, and is in increasing demand
internationally both as an external examiner and
as a high performance consultant. In recent
years he has been a Board of Directors member for
Cross Country Canada/Ski du Fond (2005-7),
Swimming Canada/Natation Canada (2004-7), and
Bobsleigh Skeleton Canada (2006-7). He currently
is on the editorial board of the International
Journal of Sport Physiology and Performance as
well as being a main board director for
Paramount World (a leading global corporate,
personnel, personal security and risk assessment
group based in the UK).
7BALINT VEKASSY
Presentation The Hungarian National Development
System This session will focus on the
development of the athlete in Hungary from the
entry level to the National Team. Critical
elements will be Programs, Training and
Competition at each stage of development.
Balint was born in 1974 and started his paddling
carrier relatively early at age 8 in 1982. He won
almost all the single boat national competitions
in his age-group until age 15 when he started to
paddle in K2 with his main adversary, Krisztian
Bartfai. During the Junior years Balint won two
World Championships titles at age 17 and also won
silver in K1 1000m. Balint made it to the senior
team the following year at age 18 but due to an
injury dropped out of the Olympic team and his
partner started with someone else in Barcelona.
The following years of adjustment to the senior
atmosphere was not easy and he quickly lost
interest in the sport while attending the
University of Physical Education in Budapest. He
got his bachelors degree majoring in canoe-kayak
coaching in 1998. In 2004 the Hungarian Canoe
Federation asked Balint to join the federation in
organizing a series of international
competitions. Since that time Balint has been the
Competition Manager for the Junior Worlds in
2005, The Senior World Championships in 2006, two
World Cups in 2007 and 2008, the 2007 Jr / U23
European Championships as well as the 2007 World
Marathon Championships. Apart from working for
the Hungarian Canoe Federation full time, Balint
is a freelance photographer and writer. He was
the official photographer of the ICF for the
Olympic Games in Beijing.
