Before you Start
  • Read experiment thoroughly before beginning it.
  • Have materials ready before beginning the lab
  • Know hazards and precautions before starting a
    lab.
  • Follow directions!!!

Know Safety Rules
  • NEVER eat, drink, chew gum, or apply make-up in
    lab.
  • Wear necessary safety equipment until all groups
    have cleaned-up their lab area.
  • Tie back long hair or loose clothing from flames,
    chemicals, or animals.
  • Know location and use of safety equipment.

Avoid Horseplay
  • NO throwing ANYTHING!
  • Stay in your seat and work with your group.
  • Use a 30cm voice and only with members of your
    group.
  • Use lab equipment for laboratory purposes only!

Chemical Safety
  • Wear safety goggles, gloves, and aprons when
    working with dangerous chemicals.
  • Only test an odor when directed to do so by a
    teacher, and use a wafting motion to direct vapor
    toward your nose.
  • Read and follow directions on MSDS sheet.

Fire Safety
  • Tie back long hair/loose clothing when working
    with flames.
  • Keep papers and other flammable objects away from
    flames.
  • When heating a test tube or bottle always point
    it away from yourself and others.
  • Know where fire extinguisher is.
  • Know fire drill procedure for the lab.

After the lab
  • Place chemicals and broken glass in
    teacher-approved areas only.
  • Clean-up when and how directed by the teacher.
  • Everything must be cleaned before the end of the
    period.

Tell the Teacher Immediately
  • if you see any broken materials.
  • if you get cut, scratched, or injured in any
    way.
  • if you see any unsafe behavior in lab.

Safety Symbols
  • Lab safety Symbols are often included in lab
    instructions to alert you to possible dangers in
    the laboratory.
  • They are also to remind you to work carefully and
    which precautions need to be taken.

Flames
  • You may be working with flames from a lab burner,
    candle, or matches. Tie back hair and clothing,
    Follow instructions from your teacher about
    lighting and extinguishing flames.

Poison
  • do not let any poisonous chemical come into
    contact with your skin, and do not inhale its
    vapors. Wash your hands when you are finished
    with the activity.

Safety Goggles
  • Always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes
    in any activity involving chemicals, flames or
    heating, the possibility broken glassware.

No Flames
  • Flammable materials may be present Make sure
    there are no flames, sparks or other exposed heat
    sources present

Disposal
  • Chemicals and other laboratory materials used in
    the activity must be disposed of safely. Follow
    the instructions from your teacher.

Lab Apron
  • Wear a lab apron to protect your skin and
    clothing from damage.

Sharp Object
  • You will be using objects that have sharp edges.
    Always direct a sharp edge away from yourself and
    others and use sharp edges only as directed.
