2 Themis To improve communication and
co-operation between the fields of Freight
Transportation and Traffic Information
- A Pan European Vision which must succeed.
- The Rail industry must set aside historical
perspectives.
- The Rail industry must understand that the Road
- industry has a significant lead in the use of
- technology in transport planning.
3Where Are We Today?

goods Drinks sector particularly whisky These
sectors demand visibility, transparency,
reliability and predictability. Freight by train
must match best high speed passenger service.
7Railway Industry From the Drivers Eye
- They are the eyes and ears
- of the Business.
- How often do we seek
- their advice on
- Transit times.
- Changeovers.
- Bottlenecks or choke
- points.
- Application of new
- or evolving Technology.
8- We can learn from the Japanese about
- Integrated networks.
- Communication co-operation between
- freight transportation and traffic
information. - High domestic freight coastal shipping.
- Micro-managed urban distribution by truck.
- Demand LCL.
9The Road Sector What Has It Achieved With
Technology?
- Customer driven focus.
- Performance monitoring and K P Is.
- Vehicle tracking, now trailer tracking with MTS
- system.
- Through the Vemis system both driver
- performance monitoring, remote door locking
and - enhanced security systems.
- Vehicles allocated to specific customer work
groups - for track trace and consignment monitoring.
Geo - fencing another new initiative.

- CTG Project on internet real time
- train follow up information.
- The Themis projects.
- Railserv.
- X Modall.

- Alcatel Mobicon.
11Key Issues For Resolution
- Simple transparent communications between
- national railway structures (CTG).
- Easy access of performance data to customers
- operating in supply chain.
- Illegal immigrant issue (UK only).
- Recognition that rail has a key role in
improving - management of road congestion. Critical EU
issue. - Recognition by rail sector that customers, not
- them, are in the driving seat.
- Complex solutions to integrate traffic data
- with Transport Management will not work. KISS!
12Technology is probably the key ingredient in the
global economy after people themselves, recognisin
g that it is people who have created that
technology. All this transportation technology
will go for nothing if we as an industry fail to
change the freight customers perception of rail
as out-of- date system for the movement of
bulk commodities.
