22Searching Databases
- General tips
- - clearly define and narrow your topic to an
appropriate size for the length of the assignment - - use Thesaurus or Subject heading features
to choose appropriate search terms (for example,
Sociological Abstracts prefers firearms rather
than guns) - - use AND/OR/NOT to combine multiple terms
- - use search limit features in database
(publication date, language, etc).

32Citing Resources
- Scholarship and research are based on built on
the concept of building on the research of others
who have studied and published on related topics. - You should incorporate the ideas of others in
your work, but you MUST give credit to the owner
of the idea (regardless of whether using a direct
quotation or not) - My adviceerror on the side of cautionthe
consequences are too great!
