Title: Armando Barrios, Venezuelan painter
1Venezuelan painter
Armando Barrios
2Armando Barrios was born on August 21, 1920 in
Caracas, Venezuela. He was the son of Serapio
Barrios and Carmen Rodriguez de Barrios, both of
Spanish origin. Since his teenage days he
developed a great love for the arts, so from the
age of 12 he was studying at the School of
Plastic and Applied Arts in Caracas. His research
in the artistic field is initially directed
towards the study of impressionist and cubist
schools. In 1942, at the age of 22, Barrios won
his first honorable mention for his work La niña
en azul (The girl in blue) at the Third Annual
Official Salon of Venezuelan Art. In 1945, after
having made several trips abroad where he
continued his studies in painting and music,
which had dabbled in a few years before, he
received the award Jose Loreto Arismendi with
the painting Desnudo (Naked).
After winning several national and international
awards, he made several trips to North America
and Europe. In 1952, the Venezuelan architect
Carlos Raúl Villanueva entrusted him several
mosaic murals, to be used in its project
Synthesis of the Arts in the University City of
Caracas, two of them are placed on the facade of
the Olympic Stadium and another in the Rectory
Square. In 1958, he became Director of the Fine
Arts Museum of Caracas. He died on December 2,
1999 in the city of Caracas. The mortuary chapel
where his remains were veiled was the same place
where his studio painting had worked in the 1950s.
