Mathematics Navigations and Number Sense
  • Deborah A. McAllister, Project Director
  • The University of Tennessee
  • at Chattanooga

2
Funding
  • Tennessee Higher Education Commission
  • Improving Teacher Quality Grant Program
  • Three professional development summer workshops
    for teachers
  • Amount funded 75,000.00

3
Summary
  • Mathematics Navigations and Number Sense will
    focus on inservice teacher professional
development as an agent to effect change in the
    Grades 3-5 classroom.
  • Through three, week-long summer workshops, 60
teachers will focus on algebra and geometry tasks
from the Navigations series, measurement and data
analysis and probability tasks from the
Navigations series, or number sense tasks from
Math Matters as a means to improve their
knowledge and skills, and, in turn, their
students' knowledge and skills in these areas.

4
Activities
  • Hands-on activities using a variety of
    mathematics manipulatives, and constructivist
strategies for teaching and learning, will be
    emphasized.
  • Computer technology will be used to explore
software and Internet sites relevant to the
    mathematics under study.

5
Standards
  • A great majority of national, state, and local
    curriculum standards and expectations for
algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis and
probability, and number and operations will be
    met through workshop activities.

6
General Information for Workshops
  • Limited to 20 teachers per workshop who have
    responsibility for teaching mathematics.
  • Current employment in participating counties.
  • Stipend provided, 50 per day for 5 days lunch
    and snacks provided.
  • Materials include relevant book(s) and ETA kit.

7
General Information (cont.)
  • Must participate in all 5 days of the workshop.
  • Complete a pre-test and a post-test of relevant
    mathematics items.
  • Principals recommendation required.
  • This project places an emphasis on serving
    teachers in (a) high-need LEAs, and/or (b)
    high-priority schools.

8
Optional Items
  • Enroll for 3 semester hours of graduate credit
during the fall of 2006 in EDUC 590.
  • Volunteer as one of five participants with whom I
will conduct site visits, both in the spring,
prior to the workshop, and after school has begun
in the fall, to observe, and make suggestions
    regarding mathematics content and methods
    employed in the classroom.

9
Workshop 1
  • Algebra and Geometry Navigations for Grades 3-5
  • June 12-16, 2006, 900 a.m. - 300 p.m.
  • Please note This is the same workshop that was
    presented in 2003 and 2005.

10
WS1 Sample Activities
  • In an algebra activity, calculators will be used
to explore and extend patterns of numbers.
  • In a geometry activity, paper representations of
quilt squares will be used to explore
transformations through slides, flips, and turns.

11
Workshop 2
  • Measurement and Data Analysis and Probability
    Navigations for Grades 3-5
  • June 19-23, 2006, 900 a.m. - 300 p.m.

12
WS2 Sample Activities
  • In a measurement activity, a geoboard will be
used to find the area of rectangular and
    irregular shapes.
  • In a data analysis and probability activity,
spinners with equal and unequal sections will be
used to collect data, and data will be graphed.

13
Workshop 3
  • Number Sense for Grades 3-5
  • June 26-30, 2006, 900 a.m. - 300 p.m.
  • Please note This is the same workshop that was
    presented in 2005.

14
WS3 Sample Activity
  • In a number sense activity, pattern blocks will
be used as a model when adding and subtracting
    fractions.
