PDCF Mission
  • The mission of the PDCF is to develop and deploy
the capability to disassemble nuclear weapons
pits and convert the resulting plutonium and
other plutonium metal to an unclassified oxide
suitable for storage and disposition. The rate
of progress in deploying this capability will be
consistent with that specified in the Agreement
Between the Government of the United States of
America and the Government of the Russian
    Federation Concerning the Management and
Disposition of Plutonium Designated As No Longer
Required for Defense Purposes and Related
    Cooperation (U.S.-Russia Plutonium Management and
    Disposition Agreement) (September 2000).

  • U oxide for disposition by HEU disposition
    program
  • Non-fissile materials for disposal
  • Facility planned for 8 year operation, 25 MT
    total (and growing)
  • Worker dose limited to 500 mrem/yr

PDCF Facility Information
  • Systems are Highly Automated (System Integration
    SI)
  • 6,200 Control Inputs/Outputs
  • 26 Non-Safety Programmable Logic Controllers
    (PLCs)
  • 18 Safety PLCs
  • Nuclear criticality and accountability
necessitate a very complicated system integration
    and control system.
  • Security and Safeguards drive the design
    considerations.
  • Geotechnical considerations drive the structural
    design.
  • Multiple HVAC zones for control of air flow and
    contaminants.

PDCF Corps Role
  • DOE has asked the Corps to perform the role of
    Construction Manager for the PDCF.
  • Interagency Agreement signed February 2008.
  • Corps will serve as prime contractor over a
    series of major subcontracts.
  • Part of an integrated project team (IPT) to
    include
  • National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA /
    DOE)
  • URS-Washington Division (Designer)
  • Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (Design
    Authority and SI)
  • Los Alamos National Lab (LANL - Development and
    Testing)
  • Other designers and consultants
