Title: Advanced functions

1
Advanced functions modeling
  • 2004 Summer Workshop

2
What is it?
  • Advanced Functions and Modeling is a course to
study functions and apply mathematical models, in
such areas as consumer issues, public policy,
    scientific investigation, and recreation.

3
What is it?
  • The purpose is to provide students an opportunity
to study modeling and applying functions. Home,
work, recreation, consumer issues, public policy,
and scientific investigations are just a few of
the areas from which applications may be found.
Many of the students enrolled in this course will
be students who will see mathematics in their
future only from their real world context.

4
Who might take this course?
  • This is meant to be a course for those students
who traditionally do NOT take a 4th mathematics
    course in high school.
  • This comprised 18-25 of the entering freshmen to
    the UNC system in 1999.

5
Who might take this course?
  • Your clientele may be students going into
business, communications, nursing, or one of many
other areas that do not have a tradition of
    requiring mathematics.

6
What does this mean?
  • This course should be an engaging course for
    students.
  • This course should be a course which reviews
algebra in context and allows students to RETAIN
their mathematical skills as they move into
    college.

7
What does this mean?
  • The average student in this course may NOT like
    mathematics.
  • The average student in this course may see no use
    for mathematics.

8
What does this mean?
  • This is NOT a Trigonometry course.
  • This is NOT an Algebra III course.
  • This is NOT a course that you already teach. It
will require some changes in the way that you
teach and in the way that you work with your
    students.

9
What are our Goals?
  • The average student in this course will leave
this course with a better appreciation for the
    utility of mathematics.
  • The average student in this course will have the
opportunity to keep his/her algebra skills
    extant.

10
What are our Goals?
  • This course should be considered a success if
your students are willing to take their first
college mathematics course as soon as they enter
college and not put it off.

11
What are our Goals?
  • This course will be a success if students are
interested in taking another course in college
that is mathematically or statistically oriented.

12
What are our Goals?
  • This course will be a success if the students and
teachers have an enjoyable time working through
the applications in the course. They should find
    it interesting and intriguing.

13
Workshop Goals
  • Review content material
  • Cover different modules that can be used in the
    classroom.
  • Cover different methods of teaching in this
    course.
  • Cover alternative methods of assessing students
    and their work.
