1.1. Introduction
IROSTIC is Huntsman's trade name for a
polyurethane-based raw material for the
manufacture of TPU adhesives. IROSTIC has been
produced by Huntsman GmbH in Osnabrück for 27
years and are available with a broad range of
base polyol and isocyanate chemistries. IROSTIC
systems can be used as a one-component or
two-component system with the IRODUR
cross-linkers. The product range is available
world-wide in a range of packaging sizes.

1. 2. Technical Information
- IROSTIC adhesive systems should be dissolved in
closed dissolvers. The time required depends on
the solvent used and on the construction features
of the equipment. It is recommended to strain the
finished solution. If fillers have been added to
the system then added straining may be essential. - The adhesive solution may be applied to the
prepared (roughened, solvent wiped) surface - Manually via brush, roller, spatula
- Mechanically via roller, knife, spray gun or air
gun - The adhesive surface should be applied onto both
surfaces. The surfaces are then air dried until
the solvent has evaporated. Depending on the
quantity applied this takes between 30-60
minutes. A frequent cause of poor adhesion is
insufficient drying. The dry surfaces are then
pressed together following the required
activation procedure to obtain a stable bond. - IROSTIC adhesives can be reactivated. After
drying the film is simply reactivated by heat. If
used as a two-component adhesive reactivation
must be carried out within a 6-12 hour period.
Reactivation takes place under infrared light
(50-80deg C) for approximately 1 minute. - Where IROSTIC is used as a two component
adhesive, the pot life must be taken into
account. Even at room temperature the
cross-linking reaction starts the moment the
cross-linking agent is added to the adhesive
solution. The viscosity of the solution gradually
increases until, after 8 to 12 hours, the
adhesive has solidified beyond spreading
consistency.

1. 4. Solvent Systems
- The choice of solvents is of great importance
since both evaporation rate and viscosity of the
finished adhesive are linked to the solvent used.
The following solvents may be used - Ketones
- Acetone, Methyl ethylketone (MEK)
- Ester
- Methylacetate, ethylacetate, butylacetate
- Aromatics
- Toluene
- Toluene may be used in combination with many of
the solvents described above and detailed
information is available for each of the
individual grades with various solvent blends.
All solvents used should be free from water and
alcohol (below 0.1). The viscosity of IROSTIC
solutions increases if instead of ketones, esters
or toluene is used. At the same solids content a
low viscosity is obtained in ketone solvents
(MEK, acetone) medium viscosity in blends of
ketones / esters and high viscosity in blends of
ketones and aromatics. -

12 MELT ADHESIVES
TM
2.1. Technical Information
- Hot melt adhesives are solvent-free adhesives
that are characteristically solid at room
temperature and are low viscosity fluids when
melted and then rapidly set upon cooling. The
development of hot melt adhesive technology
stemmed from the previous use of molten wax for
bonding. - It is possible to use TPU resins in formulation
of a range of hot melt materials to provide a
range of formulation opportunities to extend the
performance of other resin technologies.
Typically, in addition to the base hot melt
polymers a variety of tackifying resins, waxes,
antioxidants, plasticizers, and other materials
can be added to the adhesive formulation to
enhance the polymer performance. - Industry Applications of Hot Melt Adhesives
- Laminating adhesives
- Bonding of woven / non-woven fabrics
- Manufacture of athletic shoes, books, and
sporting goods - Manufacture of packaging materials
- Aerospace and automotive assemblies
2.2. Application
Hot melt adhesives form a strong bond quickly
simply by cooling and are compatible with most
materials, and are clean and easy to handle. In
general, hot melt adhesives are less water
sensitive than other thermoplastic polymers, and
are unaffected by water, moisture, or humidity,
although if applied to a damp or wet surface the
bonding may be poor. Hot melts can be
formulated to increase their water sensitivity,
as when used for stamps, envelopes and paper
products that are to be recycled. Hot melt
adhesives also have some limitations that must be
recognized. Hot melts cannot be used with heat
sensitive substrates the adhesive bonds lose
strength at high temperatures chemical
resistance may be lacking with some types of hot
melts and exposure to high temperature
environments can cause the adhesive to melt.
Consequently, hot melt adhesives are
inappropriate in situations where these
limitations cannot be avoided.
