High speed commuter railway

• Inaugurated on 31 December 2003
• 30 km route in eight minutes
• Gliding above a concrete guideway
• Maximum speed 430 km/h
• No contact between the moving vehicle and the
  track no friction high speed and rapid
  acceleration
• No rolling or propulsion noise, only wind noise

Who and how?

• Shanghai Maglev Transportation Development Co
  built guideway and stations (more than half of
  the cost)
• German consortium Siemens, ThyssenKrupp and
  Transrapid International supplied the vehicles,
  propulsion system, power supply, operation
  control system and system technology
• The propulsion - linear induction motor (the
  vehicles are much lighter and track section are
  only powered when a train is present

Other features

• The driving current can be higher for uphill
  gradients or to accelerate the train away from a
  station
• The direction of energy can be reversed for
  contactless braking
• One set of magnets lifts the body of the vehicle
  and another controls its lateral alignment
• In 2004 10 million passengers, rising to 20
  million in 2010
• The train 5 sections, 574 passengers
