How do you target industries?
  • Start with what you knowUsing LMI we can look at
the profile of existing industries and look at
the attributes (quantitative and qualitative) of
    those industries.
  • Once those attributes are identified, ask which
attributes are the most important (size, wages,
growth, etc..) and weight those attributes by
    their importance (1-10 scale).
  • Apply the weights to those regional industries
and find those that score the highest.

Industries to Occupations to Skills
  • Identify occupations from industry staffing
matrix. A cutoff value of 1 total industry
    employment yielded 90 occupations.
  • Relative attributes of occupations can be
identified as done previously for industries-
    size, wage, projected growth, etc.
  • Skills (ONET) can be identified for targeted
occupations and aggregated by industry. Is there
    an alternative?

6

Now What?
  • Once industries and occupations of interest are
identified, we can use LMI to look into some of
the pressures that those areas face (workforce
    shortage, job losses, etc.)
  • With industry-specific LMI in hand the next step
is to talk to the employers- are the needs real?
How is the industry facing challenges? What can
a WIB or other group do?
  • Gather Input!
