3Breast Augmentation
- This procedure improves the size and/or shape of
the breast. Augumentation is usually following
loss of volume of breast from various reasons
that include previous breast surgery, after child
birth, to improve body contour and to achieve
symmetry in asymmetrical breasts. It involves
placing a silicone gel implant in pocket created
under the breasts. - The surgery is performed under general
anaesthesia. Incision is placed under the breast
just above the breast crease.
4Breast Augmentation
- A pocket for placement created could be either
just behind the breast tissue or under the muscle
of the chest wall.
5Breast Augmentation
- Drains are left in the wound for a day. You stay
overnight. You will feel stiff with some pain for
few days. The discomfort will last for few days.
You may feel few twinges for few weeks. Simple
analgesics will relieve pain that may
occasionally occur. - The procedure takes about an hour. You will
overnight in the hospital and discharged next day
after removal of the drains.
6Types Of Implants
- Breast implants are made of silicone gel. They
are available in different sizes and shapes.
Commonly round or tear drop shaped implants are
used.
7Types Of Implants
- The appropriate implants will be recommended for
you requirement. They are sized in portion to
your build and chest size. You will have detailed
discussion about the size of the implant that
will suit your build. Implants are not for life
and may need to be replaced after many years. The
outer lining of the implant wears with time and
become weaker and may leak, warranting
replacement.
8Side Effects
- Bleeding in the cavity created for the implant is
rare, if present then may have to return to the
operation theatre for removal. Very rarely
implants may get infected. Antibiotics are
prescribed in the initial stages and if it
persists then the implant is removed and
reinserted after few months once the infection is
fully under control or completely eradicated.
The more common complication is breast become
harder than normal.
9Side Effects
- This is due to the body response to the silicone
and form a scar tissue. When the scar shrinks it
causes contracture of the capsule around the
implant. - You could have altered sensation of the breast or
nipple ranging from loss of sensation to
increased sensitivity. Tear drop implants can
move or rotate altering the shape of the breast. - Scar under the breast can remain red and lumpy
may take many months to improve.
