Pelamis Wave Machine
With the rise of natural gas prices
engineers have been looking into different
methods to create energy. The newest way to
produce energy is by capturing the energy from
the oceans waves which can be compared to using
windmills. The Pelamis Wave Machine is
semi-submerged into the ocean, its structure is
composed of cylindrical sections linked together
by hinged joints. The waves induce motion in the
joints and in pumps high pressure oil into
hydraulic motors, which drive electric generators
to produce electricity. Then the power produced
is sent inland through a cable. Each machine can
produce 750 kilowatts of energy which is
estimated to supply just over 500 homes in the
UK. When placed together in large quantities
they are called wave-farms, just as you would
see a large group of windmills out west.

A 40 megawatt wave-farm could produce
sufficient power for over 20,000 homes in the UK.
Generally located about 2.5 miles offshore
and are equipped with radar reflectors and buoys
to keep them from being struck by ships
