Additional Campus Resources
  • Birck Nanotechnology Center (July 2005)
  • 58 million facility, 187,000 square feet
  • Office space for 45 faculty, 21 clerical and
technical staff, and up to 180 graduate students.
  • Laboratories are specialized for nanophotonics,
    crystal growth, bio-nanotechnology, molecular
electronics, MEMS and NEMS, surface analysis,
    SEM/TEM, electrical characterization, RF systems,
    instruction and training, and precision
    micro-machining. In addition, a unique
nanotechnology incubator facility is provided for
    interaction with industry.
  • Materials Engineering (MSE) Program
  • Wide spectrum of research topics including
processing and evaluation of high temperature
    materials, biological and organic materials,
    electronic materials, nanoscale materials and
    structural materials.
  • Discovery Park Multidisciplinary Research Models

12
Selected Examples of Research Successes (1)
  • Several Wheel loaders operating with a valveless
    hydraulic system
  • Detailed experimental and theoretical
    characterization of axial piston pump/motors
  • Operating ZTM utilizing water hydraulics
  • Design and experimental testing of several
    non-metallic hydraulic components
  • Energy saving actuator control using independent
    metering valves
  • Design and experimental testing of intelligent
    hydraulic components

13
Selected Examples of Research Successes (2)
  • Development of high bandwidth fluid power control
    actuators
  • Development of agricultural steer-by-wire
    electrohydraulic steering system with electronic
    stability package
  • Modeling and simulation based log skidder
optimization resulting in higher performance and
    lower fuel costs
  • Patents filed on life sensing hydraulic
    components and pneumatic tires
  • Electronic flow mapping of hydraulic valves
  • The training of future fluid power
researcherscurrently there are more than 20
graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in
    fluid power at Purdue

14
Future Research Activities
  • Continuation of Current Projects
  • Improved modeling and control of
    multidisciplinary systems with integrated
    electrohydraulics
  • High bandwidth control of pump/motor displacement
    utilizing high speed valves
  • Virtually variable displacement pump/motors
  • Cross-coupled semi-active electrohydraulic
    suspensions
  • Passive force feedback electrohydraulic control
    systems for mobile machines
  • Integrated design of components, sensors, and
    signals

15
Intellectual Property Agreements
  • Purdue is sensitive to the confidentiality
    requirements of industry
  • Non-disclosure agreements (already in effect with
    Parker)
  • Confidential or delayed thesis options
  • Delayed or generalized publication options
  • Intellectual Property Ownership
  • Purdue can license internally developed
    technologies in exclusive or non-exclusive
    agreements
  • Trade Secrets (further research funded is
    expected)

16
Summary
  • Purdue is well positioned with faculty, students,
and laboratories to serve the future technology
    requirements of industry
  • Funded graduate student research projects
  • Undergraduate helpers for graduate students
  • Developing the skilled employees for Parkers
    future
  • Purdue has made a significant and long term
commitment to the development of new and exciting
    technologies in fluid power
  • Fluid power means new technologies at Purdue, not
    maintaining a mature technology
