What Is First Spouse
The term "first spouse" refers to the spouse of a
chief executive in the United States that is,
the spouse of the president of the USA (the first
lady of the United States and the first
gentleman of the United States) and the spouses
of the governors of the 50 United States and
U.S. territories. Since 1985, the National
Governors Association has motivated state first
ladies and gentlemen to pursue their own unique
causes and public agendas. A first spouse's
public role is traditionally ceremonial. State
and territorial first spouses, like the first
ladies of the United States, are not elected and
receive no government salary.

Interesting Facts First Ladies
There is one more first lady who is not the
spouse of the current president. James Buchanan
was the only president who never married. During
his presidency, Harriet Rebecca Lane, his niece,
assumed the official role of first lady. Lane is
counted among the official first ladies because
Buchanan never married. President Grover
Cleveland began his first term in office in 1885.
His wife, Francis Folsom Cleveland, moved into
the White House and assumed first lady duties. In
addition, she is the youngest first lady in
history. The White House was completed in 1800,
just in time for John and Abigail Adams to move
in. In addition to Martha Washington, four other
first ladies never lived in the White House.
