  • For Foreign Professors and Researchers
  • May apply for research funding through the major
    research councils as either co-applicants or
    collaborators with a Canada-based research team
  • May only apply to one research council at a time
  • Locating suitable Canadian researcher(s) to work
    with should be your first priority
  • For Foreign Students and Fellows
  • Limited number of specific programs accept
    foreign applicants

Overview of NSERC Opportunities
  • The principal applicant and any co-applicants
    must hold an academic appointment at an eligible
    Canadian university or college
  • Foreign professors or researchers may collaborate
    with a Canada-based research team in the
    following Grants Programs
  • Discovery Grants (DG) Group Projects
  • Special Research Opportunity (SRO) Program
  • Collaborative Health Research Projects (CHRP)
  • Foreign applicants may apply for the postdoctoral
    fellowship
  • Visiting Fellowships in Canadian Government
    Laboratories

Discovery Grants (DG) - Group Projects
  • Ongoing programs of research with long-term goals
  • Recognise the creativity and innovation at the
    heart of research advances
  • Recipients may use the grant for new research
    activities, not covered in original application
    (within NSERCs mandate)
  • Grants are normally awarded for 5 years
  • Shorter awards are available if justified
    (minimum 1 year)

Special Research Opportunities (SRO)
  • Unique, emerging, timely or urgent opportunities
  • Must be novel, high-risk or have a strong
    potential for breakthrough
  • SRO grants do not support
  • Ongoing research and collaboration
  • Research projects eligible for other NSERC
    programs (e.g. DG)
  • Also pre-research activities involving
    researchers in Canada and abroad
  • To investigate and develop potential new
    collaborative projects
  • Typically for a workshop or short series of
    meetings
  • Must have defined milestones and objectives
  • Grants are for up to 3 years

Collaborative Health Research Projects
  • Jointly funded by NSERC and the Canadian
    Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
  • Collaborative research projects in any field of
    the natural sciences and engineering and the
    health sciences
  • Program objectives
  • Advance knowledge and technologies to improve the
    health of Canadians
  • Encourage collaboration and integration of
    expertise between natural sciences or engineering
    and health researchers
  • Awards are for up to 3 years

Visiting Fellowships in Canadian Government
Laboratories
  • Recent doctoral graduates of any nationality
  • Opportunity for emerging scientists and engineers
  • Work with research groups in Canadian government
    departments and agencies, including
  • Agriculture, Conservation, Environment, Fisheries
    and Oceans, Food Inspection, Health, Industry,
    Defence, Natural Resources, Parks, etc.
  • Value is C42,761 per year
  • Term is 1 year, renewable for up to 2 more years

  • NRC awards and fellowships generally recognise
    excellence by Canadian scientists and innovators
  • Foreign applicants may apply for the postdoctoral
    fellowship
  • NRC Research Associateships

  • Open to Canadian citizens and foreign nationals
  • Recent PhD graduates in science or engineering or
    Masters in engineering and 5 years experience
  • Salaried position from C49,489 (PhD recruiting
    rate)
  • Appointments are for 2 years, extendable to a

    participate in foreign-funded research projects

CIHR Operating Grants
  • All areas of health research
  • Research projects conducted by individuals or
    groups of researchers
  • Foreign researchers may only apply as
    co-applicants in a group project
  • Grants awarded for 2 to 5 years
  • Shorter grants may be awarded for pilot projects
    and feasibility studies

CIHR Team Grants
  • Health research best approached through a
    collaborative team, in all areas of health
    research
  • Teams of at least three independent
    investigators, each with proven track record in
    collaborative projects
  • Foreign researchers may be included as additional
    team members (i.e. co-applicants)
  • Up to C 1 million per grant for a maximum of 5
    years

CIHR International Opportunities
  • Enables Canadian researchers to participate in
    international research projects
  • Research project must have foreign-funding
  • Funds the participation of the Canadian
    participants (where they are not eligible for
    funds directly from the foreign-funding body)
  • Maximum of C100,000 for one year

CIHR Fellowships
  • Open to Canadians and citizens of other countries
  • Must hold a PhD or professional health degree (or
    equivalent)
  • Candidates with more than 3 years post-PhD
    research training will not be considered
  • Fellowships are awarded for
  • Up to 3 years (for PhD holders)
  • Up to 4 years (for professional degree holders)
  • Up to 5 years (for professional degree holders
    who intend to complete their PhD as part of the
    fellowship)
  • Annual stipend is C21,000 to 50,000 depending
    on applicants experience and qualifications

Major Collaborative Research Initiatives
  • Leading edge collaborative research
  • Broad and critical issues of intellectual,
    social, economic and cultural significance

    Canadian team plays the lead role in the
    direction of the research
  • Encourages the involvement of foreign scholars as
    co-applicants
  • But must not exceed the number of Canadian
    participants
  • Foreign co-applicants may be brought to the
    Canadian research site as Visiting Scholars for a
    period of 3 months
  • Grants are awarded for 7 years with a minimum
    budget of C100,000 per year

  • To assist academics to develop and teach courses
    about Canada, including comparative courses where
    not less than 50 of teaching time is spent on
    Canadian material
  • Maximum value C5,800

  • Number awarded annually varies
  • Application deadline July 31 (annually)

International Research Linkages (IRL)
  • To promote and facilitate international
    collaborative research between research teams
    from Canada and one or more countries where
    Canadian studies are represented
  • Will fund research seminars, workshops, or other
    forms of linkages

  • Assists scholars in the Asia-Pacific

    project, which may include a research trip to
    Canada
  • Valued at C5,000 C10,000
  • Maximum of 2 awarded annually

ICCS Summer Seminar Series
  • Open to academics and graduate students with a
    proven interest in Canadian Studies
  • Annual 5-day bilingual seminar combining oral
    presentations by academics or practitioners,
    discussion groups, and visits to major cultural
    and political sites in Ottawa
  • Limited to 20 participants worldwide
  • ICCS will double by a ratio of 2 to 1 a
    scholarship offered to participants by ACSANZ
    (max C1,500)
  • Application deadline April 15 (annually)

ACSANZ Postgraduate Travel Award
  • For postgraduate students to make a short-term
    research trip to Canada
  • Research must be relevant to the students thesis
    and in Canadian Studies
  • Maximum value A3,000

  • Application deadline September 30

ICCS Graduate Scholarship
  • To assist Masters and Doctoral candidates to
    undertake thesis-related research on Canada at a
    Canadian university for 4-6 weeks
  • Value C3,500
  • 5 awarded annually worldwide, up to 2 awarded
    from Aus-NZ
  • Application deadline November 15
  • NB 1500 Institutional Support Award may be
    offered in conjunction with Graduate Student
    Scholarship by participating Canadian
    institutions

  • Teaching or research internships
  • May be located at any university with a Canadian
    Studies program (in Canada or abroad)

    related to Canada and not be employed in a

  • To assist prominent Canadian personalities in
    academic and cultural fields to obtain better
    exposure of their work and raise the profile of
    Canada abroad
  • Projects evaluated on quality and quantity of
    planned activities, audiences targeted and
    likelihood of fostering ongoing linkages
  • Minimum of 5 speaking engagements
  • Grant covers international airfare (economy
    only) host institution is responsible for
    visitors living expenses
  • Application must be submitted by the host
    institution through a faculty member who is a
    member of ACSANZ
  • Applications at any time to ACSANZ President
