  • Tighthead
  • Elbow down and in front of shoulder
  • Want TH to control LH position
  • TH targets to hit straight
  • Punches arm forward to get long reach/grip
  • Doesnt want to chase feet as will be too
    extended and go upward
  • A TH who is not strong enough to go straight will
    drive into hooker

Nick White - Scrummaging
  • Loosehead
  • Same set up as TH
  • Turn outside foot forward so go into TH slightly
  • Fire bind long Bind beyond arm
  • Important to win the bind first
  • Long bind will help straighten back
  • Turn hand like opening door to gain extra
    control/strength
  • On your ball LH will try to lift TH slightly to
    depower him
  • Fire ankles forward most important for go
    forward on hit
  • If LH lifts hips will go down or up hinging

Nick White - Scrummaging
  • Hooker
  • Trigger right foot of hooker
  • Stance is big toe of left foot opposite instep of
    right foot
  • Drops right foot back on engage call i.e. the
    handbrake released
  • Hooker binding
  • up on seam of jersey
  • use forearm for additional control/strength
  • Hook preferably 2 channel
  • 1 channel has too much twisting

Nick White - Scrummaging
  • Front Row
  • All 3 front rowers crouch and engage together
  • Locks
  • Props move hips so lockers can slip into position
    without too much movement
  • Shortest over tallest
  • Outside foot is power foot and doesnt move on
    engage
  • A sprinters start position release handbrake
    foot
  • Bind through crutch and onto upper hip
  • Use forearm to help grip
  • Small power steps forward
  • Dont want too over shoot forward
  • Generally most powerful on tighthead side but
    good to play both sides

6
Nick White - Scrummaging
  • No 8 and flankers
  • No 8 also have a trigger on the pause he
drops forward foot back and shunts forward on
engage call (Watch for this as it is out lawed
as per IRB Memo date 13 May 2008)
  • Flankers use head and shoulder to drive on 45o
but still pushes forward with spine still in line
  • Keep as many people on scrum for as long
  • Engagement call needs to be consistent throughout
    game
