Conservation is a Necessity

• Currently Many Counties in NC are in Extreme to
  Severe Drought Conditions
• Raleigh has 98 days of supply remaining (Dec
  10th)
• Durham has about 7 weeks of drinking water left
  in two primary reservoirs (Dec 6th)
• Options to Increase Water Supply Are Limited and
  Expensive

Current Mandates

• Senate Bill 668 State Law 2007-546allows only
  the purchase of Water Efficient Products for
  Existing Buildings and New Construction for state
  facilities.
• The Governor strongly encourages and promotes the
  products to implement an immediate reduction in
  water consumption.

State Law 2007-546 - Existing Buildings

• Installation of aerators in sink faucets that
  reduce the flow of water to a minimum 0.5 g.p.m.
• Installation of shower heads that reduce the flow
  of water to a minimum 1.5 g.p.m.
• Resetting hot water heaters to 120 degrees
• Training of staff to monitor the use of
  irrigation systems and to base the use of the
  system on the moisture content of the soil,
• Either the elimination of potable water for
  irrigation or the reduction of water consumption
  in the building by twenty percent (20) based on
  water consumption for the 2002-2003 fiscal year.

State Law 2007-546 - New Construction

• Water systems shall be designed and constructed
  to use a minimum of 20 less potable water than
  the indoor water use baseline calculated for the
  building after meeting the fixture performance
  requirements required by the 2006 North Carolina
  Plumbing Code.
• Outdoor potable water or harvested groundwater
  consumption shall be reduced by a minimum 50
  over that consumed by conventional means through
  water use efficient landscape materials and
  irrigation strategies, including water reuse and
  recycling.

Water and Energy Saving Components for Immediate
Use

• Low flow 0.5 gpm faucet spray nozzles
• Low flow 1.5 gpm showerheads
• Currently soliciting quotes or bids for an
  interim term contract for these basic items.
• A permanent term contract will be available in a
  few months to provide low flow and efficient
  water use with a wider selection and thread
  options.

Lavatory Faucet Water Savings

• Typical lavatory faucet may have a flow rate of
  2.2 gpm to 2.8 gpm, or greater if an older
  building.
• A faucet flow rate of 0.5 gpm would be a minimum
  of a 77 reduction.

• Typical shower heads may have a flow rate of 2.2
  gpm to 4.0 gpm, or greater if an older building.
• A faucet flow rate of 1.5 gpm would be a minimum
  40 to 60 reduction
