1The Eco-Friendly Trends 5 Sustainable Fabrics
You Must Know About
Eco-friendly trends can be set by you when you
choose conscious fashion over fast fashion. A way
to certify a mindful purchase is to buy
sustainably made garments. Fast fashion requires
highly accelerated manufacturing rates to fulfill
demands. This industry opts for virgin synthetic
materials such as nylon, polyester, or acrylic
that are low-priced and quick to produce. What we
dont realise is that these materials take
decades, if not more, to biodegrade, and are
filling up landfills. Designers such as Anita
Dongre strongly advocate and feel for sustainable
and conscious fashion, thereby ensuring that one
can stay stylish while doing the right thing.
They adopt business practices that positively
impact both the environment as well as society.
As the first step towards becoming a conscious
buyer, you need to become acquainted with the
different kinds of sustainable fabrics out there.
Learning is the first step toward becoming what
you aim to be.
2What Exactly Are Sustainable Fabrics?
Sustainable fabrics are made from recycled or
natural materials, that aim at lessening the harm
done during the production process. They
contribute to a reduction of waste, lessen
adverse environmental impact, lower carbon
emissions, conserve water, and regenerate the
soil. However, no one fabric is completely
sustainable. Here are a few sustainable
ones Bamboo Bamboo is a regenerative crop that
is fast-growing and doesnt need fertilization.
When processed, it is touted as a sustainable
fabric. If properly produced, bamboo linen is
comfortable, incredibly absorbent, and
moisture-wicking.
3ECONYL
ECONYL is made from regenerated nylon waste and
is a common alternative to virgin nylon. This is
sourced from waste fabrics, industrial plastic,
and fishing nets, and undergoes a closed-loop
manufacturing process, thereby reducing waste and
conserving water. Hemp Hemp requires a license
to grow since it is associated with marijuana. It
is basically a specific type of cannabis plant
that can be grown quickly without exhausting the
soil and has no pesticide requirement. The fabric
created with hemp is durable, non-irritating, and
very useful.
4Linen
Made from flax, linen is a popular sustainable
fabric that we are all familiar with. It is a
commonly used material for mens trousers and
shirts and shirts and trousers for women and kids
as well. This can also be grown without
fertilizer and in those areas where a majority of
other crops cannot survive. Flax is used
entirely, as seeds, crops, and oil, ensuring no
waste. Linen too is an expensive material but the
best for summer months.
5Organic Cotton
Organic cotton is formed without any synthetic
fertilizers, toxic pesticides, or genetically
modified seeds. This means the fabric production
process is a sustainably managed one. However,
there is a lack of transparency on items flaunted
as organic cotton as they dont always have
proper certifications. Organic certifications are
expensive, but if you can, look for an OCS or
GOTS certification. Modal A semi-synthetic
textile, modal, is made from beech tree wood
pulp. Though the pulp is natural, unfortunately,
the production process comprises chemicals such
as sodium hydroxide, though in lower amounts as
required for rayon viscose. This is a delicate
and soft fabric used for pyjamas, underwear,
towels, and bedsheets.
