How Best to Secure a Safe in Your Apartment

  • Just because you live in a rented apartment,
doesnt mean that you dont have the right to
secure your items of importance or value, but you
may face issues with a landlord who isnt keen on
you drilling holes into the floor for a bolted
    high security safe.
  • Should you face issues as a person living in a
rented apartment, or any type of property for
that matter, here are some ideas for securing a
safe without upsetting anyone, while giving your
    items the best protection possible

3
  • Bolting the safe to a wall
  • Keep in mind that your landlord may also object
to this, since it will involve drilling and
damage to a wall, but they may view it as being
less harmful and easier to repair in the event
that you vacate the property in the future.
  • Bolting the safe to a steel slab
  • As a simpler, less time consuming and more
effective option for those living in rented
accommodation, this method requires a heavy-duty
piece of steel around a ¼ inch thick, that is
larger than the width of your doorframe (so that
it cannot fit through the doorway if turned on
its side). Alternatively, you can simply ask a
local safe supplier and installer to bolt the
safe to a steel slab for you.

4
  • The idea is that by mounting your safe to a
large, heavy object, a burglar would find it
physically impossible to even move the safe, let
alone remove it from the apartment to try and
access its contents. This may be your only option
for preventing the safe from being stolen (which
most burglars prefer to do so that they can work
on opening it from the comfort of their lair,
using all the right tools and equipment), if your
landlord does object to holes being drilled in
the floor or in the wall. Just make sure that the
steel is in the right place before the safe is
mounted into it, and if youre any doubt as to
the best place to keep your safe, you can consult
    with a local security specialist.

5
  • Hiding your safe
  • There are many places in an apartment that you
can hide a safe, but keep in mind that a very
determined thief will likely find it no matter
how well its hidden, provided they have the time
to conduct a thorough search. With this in mind,
ensure that your door has a high security lock on
it to prevent an intruder from getting in, and
take any additional security measures that may be
appropriate to prevent your apartment from
    becoming a target for criminals.

  • For more ways to secure both your valuables, and
your apartment in general, talk to a local
locksmith or safe supplier, who can ensure that
your valuables are properly protected, without
incurring the wrath of your landlord.
