  • This unit plan is designed for students who are 7
    and 8 years old.
  • This lesson plan will be used for first and
    second grades.
  • This lesson is not designed for a special needs
    or honor class, but designed for students in a
    regular first or second grade setting.

  • SC.1.2.1 demonstrate curiosity, initiative, and
    creativity by observations of changes in the
    environment (e.g., life cycles motion of
    celestial objects sun and shadow.)
  • SC.1.2.2 use scientific instruments and
    everyday materials to investigate the natural
    world (e.g., hand lens, balance, magnets,
    thermometer, seeds, rocks.)
  • SC.1.2.4 collect, record, and compare
    information using a variety of classification
    systems (e.g., ordering, sorting, sequencing) and
    using a variety of communication techniques
    (e.g., sketches, pictographs, models).

  • Colorful crepe paper
  • Transparent screen
  • Dark poster board
  • Clear jar
  • Hot water
  • Frozen package of ice substitute

Utilize Media and Materials
  • Day 1 (Introduction to unit)
  • -Introduce weather to students
  • -Complete K and W of K-W-L chart about weather
  • -Check the days temperature and record in
    individual Weather Log
  • -Weather Words activity

Utilize Media and Materials (Days 2 3)
  • Day 2 (Wind and wind movement)
  • -Go outside 3 days this week and observe and
    record wind movement in Wind Watching recording
    sheets.
  • -Make windsocks to take home.
  • Day 3 (Clouds)
  • -Demonstration experiment done by teacher to
    show how clouds are formed.
  • -Discuss 3 major types of clouds cirrus,
    stratus, and cumulus
  • -Use cotton balls and other art supplies to
    create picture of a cloud of their choice.

Utilize Media and Materials (Day 4)
  • Day 4 (Water Cycle)
  • -Do an experiment making our own Water
    Cycle(students will mainly be observing this and
    making predictions)
  • -On paper, students will be drawing the water
    cycle and then writing a paragraph to explain
    what is going on based on what they have learned.

Utilize Media and Materials (Day 5)
  • Day 5 (Forecasting)
  • -Go over Weather Logs
  • -In groups of two, children will visit Weather
    Classroom.com where they can use the Interactive
    Weather Forecast to make their own realistic
    forecast for the next week.
  • -Review entire unit.
  • -On their own, students will complete and turn
    in the L of the K-W-L chart and turn it in.
