Title: Data Management in Mobile Ad hoc Network

1
Data Management in Mobile Ad hoc Network
  • PhD Scholar Noman Islam
  • Supervisor Dr. Zubair A. Shaikh
  • Dated 9/15/2009
  • Presented under CRUC Weekly Research Seminar

2
Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET)
  • As defined by IETF 1
  • MANET is an autonomous system of mobile routers
(and associated hosts) connected by wireless
links--the union of which form an arbitrary
graph. The routers are free to move randomly and
    organize themselves arbitrarily thus, the
network's wireless topology may change rapidly
and unpredictably. Such a network may operate in
a standalone fashion, or may be connected to the
    larger Internet

MANET is characterized by following main features
Infrastructure-less, self-organized,
self-created, and self-administered, lower
powered but autonomous nodes, unpredictable and
dynamically changing topology

Data Management
  • According to Data Management Association (DAMA)
    4
  • Data management is the development, execution
and supervision of plans, policies, programs and
practices that control, protect, deliver and
enhance the value of data and information assets
  • According to Filip et. al.5, the goal of Data
    Management is to
  • allow individual devices to compute what
information each device needs, when the device
needs it, and how it can obtain the information

4
Data Management Issues
  • According to Tomasz et. al. 13, Data Management
in Mobile Environments poses new challenges in
    contrast to traditional approaches
  • Mobility
  • Disconnected Mode
  • New Data Access Models
  • Scale
  • Franklin et. al.14 highlights data Management
    requirements in ubiquitous environment. These
    requirements are due to
  • Mobility
  • Context-Awareness
  • Collaboration

5
List of Data Management Issues
  • Based on Filip et. al. 5, Tomasz et. al. 13,
Franklin et. al.14, following is the list of
    important data management issues
  • Routing Issues
  • Service Discovery
  • Location Management
  • Query Processing
  • Caching
  • Replication
  • Naming
  • Transaction Management
  • Heterogeneity
  • Security

6
Data Management Issues
  • Routing
  • periodic information exchange
  • clustering
  • location based routing
  • power-aware routing
  • Service Discovery
  • Directory based Vs directory-less
  • Lazy Vs Aggressive discovery
  • Polling Vs notification
  • Semantic Vs Syntactic matching
  • Failure Detection and Recovery Strategy
  • Location Management
  • GPS

7
Data Management Issues(contd.)
  • Query Processing
  • Profile driven querying (diabetic users profile
can say Always keep track of the nearest
    hospital)
  • Querying is serendipitous
  • Caching
  • Profile Driven Caching
  • Cooperative Caching
  • Data Access and Data Path
  • Replication
  • Naming
  • Transaction Management

Cooperative Caching
8
Data Management Issues(contd.)
  • Heterogeneity
  • Security
  • No fixed infrastructure
  • Broadcast nature
  • Routing layer attacks

9
Cross layer Service Discovery
  • A Service Discovery protocol has three major
    components
  • Provider
  • Consumer
  • Directory
  • A Cross layer Service Discovery scheme utilizes
information from other layers as discussed in
    15
  • For example, a service discovery scheme working
on application layer and utilizes information of
    network layer like routing information

10
Current Service Discovery Algorithms
  • Directory less
  • GSD
  • Allia
  • Konark
  • IBM DEAPspace
  • UPnP
  • Directory based
  • SLP
  • JINI
  • DReggie

11
What is my PhD Objective?
  • Problem
  • To propose a Data Management framework for
    Mobile Ad hoc Network
  • Issues to be addressed
  • Service Discovery
  • Cross layer scheme
  • Heterogeneity
  • Case Study
  • Vehicular Ad hoc Network

12
Problem Justification
  • A small amount of work has been reported in
literature about a comprehensive data management
    framework for MANET
  • To our knowledge no single service discovery
protocol for VANET exists that covers all of
    these aspects
  • Semantics
  • Cross layer service discovery
  • QoS
  • A large number of potential safety and
    non-safety applications 10,11

Why Cross layer solution? more resilience,
robustness 12, MANET is considered a
multilayer problem
13
Research Contribution
  • Simulated a Mobile Ad hoc Network in NS-2
  • Design of a Cross layer, Secure, QoS provisioned
and Semantically rich Service Discovery scheme
for Mobile Ad hoc Network, submitted at 9
  • Development of Mobile Ad hoc Network Simulator
  • Simulated a cross layer service discovery scheme,
    published at 7
