California State University (CSU)
  • 23 campuses with 1800 bachelor degree programs in
    240 subject areas
  • The states primary undergraduate teaching
    institution.
  • Draws from top third high school graduates.
    Minimum 2.0 GPA required, but 3.0 GPA
    automatically qualifies for admission.
  • Its admissions priority is upper-division
    students transferring from California Community
    Colleges
  • CSU educates more community college transfer
    students than all other California universities
    and colleges combined
  • Average cost is around 16,000.00 per year

University of California (UC)
  • 9 undergraduate campuses
  • Draws from the top 1/8 of the states high school
    graduates. Average GPA in 2007 3.78 with SAT of
    1763/ACT of 24.8.
  • Offers various advanced degrees, including law
    and medicine
  • Academic study areas on UC campuses span more
    than 150 disciplines, one of the broadest ranges
    of study of any university in the world
  • More UC academic programs are rated among the top
    ten nationally than any other private or public
    university
  • With approximately 42,000 graduate students, UC
    produces 7 percent of the nations Ph.D.
    candidates nationally
  • Average cost is around 23,000.00 per year

Independent Colleges
  • Nine out of ten students receive financial
    assistance
  • More students graduate in four years, saving as
    much as 100,000.00
  • Every admission application is personally
    reviewed
  • Classes are smaller and taught by professors (not
    teaching assistants)
  • Each student is given personal attention to help
    them succeed in college and life
  • 40 of the students are from communities of color
  • 60 of the students are women
  • Although the overall coast is higher per year
    than public schools, the average financial aid
    package is 18,900.00

Technical/Specialist Schools
  • These schools help students pursue an intense
    program in their area of interest, such as
    fashion design, computer animation, automotive
    mechanics, culinary arts.
  • Financial aid is available for all accredited
    post-secondary schools. Students interested in
    these specialty schools should contact their
    admissions office to procure an application.
  • This is a great way for students who do not
    necessarily want to pursue a four-year degree but
    who want to specialize in a particular area to
    acquire that knowledge directly out of high
    school.
  • Most specialty schools have placement services
    for their graduates.

College Testing Requirements
  • ACT
  • Register for this test at www.actstudent.org
  • Take Writing Option
  • Test dates for seniors are October 27 and
    December 8
  • SAT Reasoning Test
  • Register at www.collegeboard.com
  • Test dates for seniors are October 6, November 3,
    December 1

SAT II Subject Area Tests
  • Required for UC System, some private schools
  • Students will need two subject area tests, not
    from the same curricular area.
  • The areas must be from the following
  • History, Literature, Mathematics (Level 2 only),
    science or language other than English. These
    tests may not be taken any later than December of
    the senior year.

SAT Prep Classes at DHS
  • E-Group Learning will be starting a four week SAT
    prep class beginning Saturday, October 6. Class
    meets on Saturdays from 8 am-1 pm.
  • Cost is 470 and prepares seniors for the
    November 3rd SAT.

ASVAB
  • Given on November 14th 2006 during periods 1
    4. Students will need field trip form signed
    by teachers and parent. FREE of charge.
  • Comprehensive career assessment with no
    obligation to join armed services or to be
    contacted by them.
  • Required by armed services of all recruits.

Las Positas Assessment
  • Offered to students in Spring of senior year.
  • Students must register with Las Positas College
    prior to sitting for assessment
  • Registration information given to students prior
    to assessment by visiting counselor
  • Free of charge
  • Students may not sign up for classes without
    assessment in English and Mathematics
