2Introduction
- PM Narendra Modi announced the 'RBI Retail Direct
initiative on 13th November 2021. - The programme allows individual investors to buy
and sell government bonds through the internet. - The scheme was introduced by the Reserve Bank of
India (RBI) in its February 2021 monetary policy.
3What is Retails direct investor?
- The RBI Retail Direct Scheme enables retail
investors to buy and sell government securities
(G-sec) in the primary and secondary markets via
the internet. - Small investors can now invest in G-Secs by
opening a gilt securities account with the RBI,
according to details published by the RBI. Retail
Direct Gilt (RDG) Account will be the name of the
new account.
4Who can open the RDG account?
- According to the RBI's announcement of July 12,
2021, a retail investor can register an RDG
account if they have the following - Any official valid document such as Aadhaar,
Voter ID for KYC purposes - Valid email ID
- Registered mobile number
- Rupee savings bank account maintained in India
- PAN issued by the Income Tax Department
- Any official valid document such as Aadhaar,
Voter ID for KYC purposes - The RDG account can be formed alone or in
partnership with another retail investor who fits
the requirements.
5How to Register on the online portal?
- Investors can register on the web portal by
filling out the online form and verifying their
information with the OTP sent to their registered
mobile number and email address. - After completing the registration process, a
'Retail Direct Gilt Account' will be created, and
instructions for accessing the web portal will be
sent through SMS/e-mail. - On the NDS-OM, the RDG Account will be available
for both primary and secondary market
transactions.

- Buy and Sell of government bonds in secondary
market
7Charges for opening RDG account
- There will be no fees associated with opening and
maintaining a 'Retail Direct Gilt account - Payment gateway fees, if any, will be borne by
the registered investor - The aggregator will not charge a fee for
submitting bids in the primary auctions
