Title: Mountain View Community Hospital Part A

1
Mountain View Community Hospital Part A
  • Team 2A
  • Presented by Chris Graves, Chris Hodo, Tillman
    Foster, Brad Hook

2
MVCH
  • This presentation answers the questions on page
67-69. MVCH is a general hospital located in a
city of around 50,000 people with an estimated
growth rate of 10. To accommodate this growth
rate the hospital must expand both its facilities
and its database. This presentation will answer
questions 1-5 and project exercises 1-4.

3
MVCH Project Question 1
  • Which information system planning matrixes (among
those shown in this case study or others not
shown) might assist the study team at MVCH to
determine a tiered location plan for databases?
    Why? (pg71 Hoffer).

4
MVCH Answer to Question 1
  • MVCH must be very careful with their selection of
plans since the rate of growth is fairly high
they must choose a plan that can be expanded upon
beyond the projected five years as well. The
tiered location plan will represent the location
of databases and the various machines that will
have access to it found throughout the
    organization.

5
Question 1 contd
  • This plan must include information about the data
to be hosted on each machine one acceptable
approach to mapping the data is to develop a
business function-to-data entity matrix, which is
a visual way of mapping storage points. It will
also be necessary to map a location-to-function
matrix which is used in conjunction with the
function-to-data matrix to determine where those
functions are to be performed. Another choice is
a Unit to function matrix, which is used to
depict visually the function performed by each
    unit.

6
Question 1 contd
  • It is also necessary to look at data ownership
and accessibility rights at this stage in the
plan allowing access rights to units and
sub-units who will have need of the data. This
helps in any coding needed to complete a
specialized database should one be required. I
would also like to note that MVCH should
definitely do any server/system upgrades now
while the Database is in need of porting. It
makes the installation process longer but leads
to less headaches in the future.

7
Project Exercise 1
  • Rearrange the rows and columns in figure 4 so
that the entries form a block diagonal pattern.
What conclusions do you reach from analyzing this
    pattern? (pg 72, Hoffer)

8
Chart before reaaranging
  • This chart is difficult to read and obtain
    information from.

9
M data entity (column) is maintained by business
function (row)
R data entity (column) is used by business
function (row)
10
Concerning the chart
  • Each entity participates in the some fashion with
all of the business functions. These entities
involve the majority of entities in some way or
another. All columns marked with an R are read
or used by the business handling functions of
MVCH. This new arrangement of the matrix allows
us to indicate, what data will be accessed most
often and more or less for what purposes as well.
This table also helps depict which processes will
need the data stored in location when used with a
    data-to-location matrix.

11
Plausible objectives for
  • Quality of medical care
  • Control of capital costs
  • Recruitment and retention of skilled personnel

12
Quality of medical care
  • All staff members have to meet strict educational
    and certification requirements.
  • Improve services and reduce the number of
    customers complaints.
  • Maintain library resources of up-to-date medical
journals and other types of specialized
    literature.

13
Control of capital cost
  • Acquire with caution new surgery equipment and
    electro-diagnosis technology.
  • Wisely manage capital consuming, long-term
    projects.

14
Recruitment and retention of skilled personnel
  • Maintain a predetermined number of Nursing,
    Personnel, and Volunteering people.
  • Maintain an attractive employee benefits plan.
  • Distribute subsidies among university and college
    enrolled employees.
  • Offer flexible schedules

15
Plans for Mountain View community hospital
  • To increase the size of the administrative staff
  • To increase the size of the medical staff
  • Create a new department of retirement living
    overseen by Ms. Baker
  • Create a new department of Geriatric Medicine
    overseen by Dr. Brown

16
Structure of the hospital BEFORE AFTER
17
(Cont.)
  • The business function clinical services and
patient care in services in figure 2 need to be
    expanded with some new sub-functions.

18
Figure 2 (p.68)
19
(Cont.)
  • The preliminary enterprise data model does not
need to be changed at this time. (Figure 3)(P.
    69)

20
Figure 3 (P.69)
21
(Cont.)
  • Some functions may be added to business
function-data- entity (figure 4) and business
    functions-to-CSF matrices.

22
Figure 4 (P.70)
23
Possible activities for volunteer business
functions
  • Recruit volunteers
  • Schedule volunteers
  • Evaluate volunteers
  • Train volunteers
  • Schedule training for volunteers
  • Schedule orientation for volunteers
  • Meet patients
  • Meet directors
  • Team meetings

24
How to find operating cost control
  • This can be achieved by selecting the functions
with an E business function status from the
    business function-to-CSF matrix (Nursing, Patient
Accounting, Etc.), and then finding out what are
the entities from the business function-to-data
entity matrix that would be maintained or used by
those functions. The problem is that almost every
entity turns out to be of great importance for
this CSF, and this could happen with the rest of
the CSF. Consequently, the quality of all data is
    essential.

Risk Management
  • Risk Management activities that could happen
    within a business function
  • Begin holding emergency simulation drills
  • Schedule evacuation training secessions
  • Develop a recovery plan in the event of a
    disaster
  • Create back ups of data and update it regularly

27
Data Entities for Risk Management
  • Types that are included in (Figure 4) that are
being used by the business function
  • Facility
  • Physician
  • Patient
  • Test
  • Vendor

28
Data Entities for Risk Management (cont.)
  • An additional example would be an Evacuation
    Location entity that would provide
  • An evacuation plan
  • Emergency Phone numbers and contacts
  • Equipment for evacuating from different floors of
    the building
  • Trained personnel

30
Brads Question
  • Name an example of a Risk Management activity
that could happen in a business function.

31
Chris Graves question
  • What data entity types are required to give less
than Three business functions access to them
when taken from the table? Note these may be R
    or M.

32
Chris H.s Question
  • What are the four Critical Success Factors
(CSFs) that are discussed in the Mountain View
    Community Hospital Project Case?

33
Tillmans Question
  • Based on figure 5, determine which data entities
    are desirable for quality care.
