  • Why a 4-H Portfolio?
  • How to complete the application for scholarships
    for trips.
  • How to make your accomplishments stand out on
    paper.

Why should I apply?
  • 3 Award Trips
  • Members from Clinton County attend these trips by
    invitation only
  • Award Trips include Washington DC, New York City,
    and Capital Days

Who is eligible?
  • Any Clinton County 4-H member can apply for trip
    scholarships who are 13 years old and up. (by
    January 1 of the current 4-H year)

What is a Portfolio?
  • A portfolio is a visual representation of your
    abilities, skills, capabilities, knowledge,
    qualitiesit represents your potential.
  • It is a physical collection of artifacts that
    provides evidence of your potential by
    demonstrating what you accomplished in the past

Why a Portfolio?
  • The purpose of a 4-H Portfolio is to help you
  • review and reflect on your previous 4-H
    experiences
  • recognize the skills and accomplishments youve
    acquired
  • learn to market yourself as a result of these
    experiences

Why a Portfolio?
  • As you Learn By Doing during your 4-H
    activities, you gain knowledge and skills in
    your areas of interest
  • Many of these skills are transferable
  • Transferable skills can be used to help you reach
    other goals such as applying to college, getting
    a job, or winning a scholarship
  • Identifying and documenting your skills with take
    time and thought, but the effort will be worth it

Why a Portfolio?
  • Employers and college admissions staff use
    portfolios to judge your academic ability,
    maturity, and motivation
  • Portfolios help you prepare for careers or
    college by helping you
  • Prepare for interviews
  • Showcase your skills
  • Demonstrate the results of your work
  • Assess your progress

Adult Participation
  • The Award Trip Application and Portfolio must be
    completed by the 4-H member
  • This includes filling out forms, writing the 4-H
    Story, etc
  • Adults can help by guiding, explaining, helping
    to compile information, and proofreading

Special Accommodations
  • We will make accommodations for those members who
    cannot complete the Portfolio and Application in
    the usual format
  • A note detailing the accommodation must be
    included with the application
  • Any person, regardless of race, color, religion,
    gender, national origin, ancestry, marital
    status, familial status, sexual orientation, or
    disability may enroll as a 4-H member.

  • What you will need to get started
  • Past 4-H Project Books, Project Reports, Building
    My 4-H Portfolio, and any other materials used to
    report your 4-H experiences.

Formatting Your Portfolio
  • Portfolios may be handwritten or typed
  • All sections should be completed on 8.5x11
    paper.
  • Materials may be compiled in a binder, folder, or
    other organized fashion as long as it is neat and
    easy to read
  • Tabs and divider pages may help separate sections
    and make it easier to read
  • You can be creative in the presentation of your
    portfolioit should be reflective of you and your
    experience in 4-H

Requirements
  • 1. Award Trip Application (neatly handwritten or
    12 point font)
  • 2. 4-H Portfolio (neatly handwritten or 12 point
    font)
  • 3. 4-H Story (1 pages, neatly handwritten or 12
    point font double spaced)

Requirements Documentation
  • Your portfolio should document your experience as
    well as explain it. Examples of documentation
    include
  • Certificates of achievement
  • Drawings, newspaper clippings, etc
  • Samples of agendas youve written, flyers youve
    made, etc
  • Photographs (captioned)
  • Other
  • This documentation should be part of every
    section.

  • Select the top three trips you would like to be
    considered for on the Application
  • Take the time to fill out all sections!

4-H Projects
  • List the projects you worked on during the
    current 4-H year
  • You will explain your project activities in more
    detail in the Project Record section of the
    Portfolio

Public Presentations
  • List the title and topic of any presentations you
    gave for 4-H
  • List where presented

Community Service
  • Remember, this category is to document what you
    do for others within your communityindividually
    or as a group.
  • HELPING to do for others is the keyleadership
    for these events is good, also helping as a
    member is good, too!

4-H Leadership Experiences
  • Leadership means taking the lead in giving
    direction, planning, and organizing
  • Effective leadership depends on help from others,
    but helping is a supportive role, not leadership
  • Identify the things you have done in 4-H where
    you planned, organized, and gave direction,
    either with others or individually
  • Use action words to describe your
    responsibilities ex conducted (rather than
    attended)

4-H Leadership Experiences
  • List club offices held during the current year
    and responsibilities of the role
  • List any committee membership and explain your
    role
  • Explain any other leadership role you had related
    to 4-H projects or activities

4-H Public Relations
  • How did you help tell the 4-H story?
  • In this section, tell about how you were an
    ambassador for 4-H.

Exhibits
  • List any items you exhibited and awards received
    if applicable
  • List where they were exhibited

Other 4-H Participation
  • List any other 4-H events or activities you
    participated in that arent listed elsewhere
  • Examples fundraising, club party, etc

4-H Story
  • 1 page 4-H Story that summarizes and highlights
    how you have benefited from your 4-H experience.
  • Could answer questions like
  • How have you benefited from 4-H?
  • How will you share your experiences in 4-H?
  • What impact will you be able to make as a result
    of your 4-H experience?

4-H Story
  • Should also tell how 4-H participation helped you
    develop your head, heart, hands, and health

For example Health What skills have you learned
in 4-H? How will they benefit you in the
future? Heart Select an experience in which you
were a part of a group and explain your
contributions to that effort.

  • The Project Record consists of 3 parts
  • Project Plan
  • Diary
  • Results
  • The Project Plan includes your goals and
    preparation
  • The Diary is a record of the steps you took
    during the project
  • The Results asks you to reflection on your
    project experience

The 4-H Project Record
  • Defining a 4-H Project
  • A project is a planned series of learning
    activities/experiences that engage youth in the
    use of their heads and hands in ways that result
    in enhanced competencies, open hearts and better
    health.
  • Projects include at least 6 hours of learning
    experiences
  • Projects are overarching educational experiences,
    as opposed to activities or events which may be a
    single day or a few hours as part of a project
  • For example, Horse Camp is part of the Horse
    Project
  • Or, building a birdhouse is part of a Natural
    Resources Project

Submission Process
  • Make sure your Application and Portfolio are
    complete and signed
  • Always keep a copy for yourself!
  • All materials are due in the Extension Office by
    June 1st by 430 pm.

Now What?
  • Applications and Portfolios will be evaluated by
    the end of June
  • Award recipients will be announced during
    Achievement Day
