Wildlife Danger Tree Workshop

Wildlife
  • First there is no policy that puts wildlife
    before human safety.

3
We can use wildlife to help our approach to
danger trees.
  • Help us to recognize there is value in those
trees-Dead and down trees are part of the
ecological Fabric. Size and numbers matter to
wildlife. They make up home and habitat for many
    important species and functions, Balance
  • Help us read some of the signs as to a trees
health and condition. Often lots of wildlife
activity is and indicator of stress or bug
    activity or decay.

4
What the Danger tree policy is not
  • License to cut down every dead or dying tree
  • Way to get volume to the mill,
  • A way to get that needed bunk log
  • A way to keep the SSSF fund solvent etc

5
The way we implement this policy will be
monitored by the public. We have seem many legal
challenges, Articles and reviews etc on our dead
tree policy.
6
What might be the role of your biologist be as
you implement this policy?
  • Help you develop creditably for your
    implementation of the policy
  • Help you to document some of your rationale in
    your determination.
  • Help you to meet some of the forest plans
    standards and guides.
  • Help us track some commitment we as an Agency has
    made to other (USFWL Service)

7
Some thoughts.
  • The values of the trees or material are there.
  • Consider what maybe a greatest benefit.
  • And what our policy calls for in that allocation
  • Fish log in stream structure
  • Energy dissipater to stop erosion
  • Nurse log or future wildlife dening site
  • The list goes on.

8
If this policy is to become creditable it will
depend on you.
  • I ask that you
  • Communicate with your biologist
  • Consider the situation.
  • That you are Careful

9
Thank you
