2Exciting patterns and effects can be made by
tying fabric before it is dyed.
3The fabric stays the original colour where it is
tied but changes colour where it is not tied.
4This is called resist dyeing.
5Bandhani is a tie and dye technique from India.
6Small sections of fabric are tied with thread to
create designs and motifs.
7It takes many hours to tie the most intricate
patterns.
8Often more ties are added to the fabric before it
is dyed for a second or third time.
9Each tie keeps the fabric that is inside the
thread from changing to a new colour.
10When the ties are removed the you can see where
the dye could not reach the fabric.
11There are many different traditional ways of
tying fabric in India.
12In Udaipur the local name for tie and dye is
chundri.
13Another special name is leharia. This is an
effect that looks like waves across the fabric.
14Turbans in Rajasthan are often dyed with a
striped leharia pattern.
15Another traditional pattern is made from many
dots.
16A weak dye solution is mixed to mark out complex
patterns.
17Special metal frames are used to print out the
tying guides.

19The patterns are marked on the fabric.
20The gridlines will be used to show where to put
the ties.

23Tied and ready to dye.
24Measuring the dye for the fabric.
25Mixing the dye in water and heating to make the
dye bath.
26The dye bath ready to add the fabric.
27Dip dyeing the fabric in one colour.
28The first colour is ready.
29The dyed fabric is carefully rinsed ready for the
second colour.
30Tying the fabric and binding with polythene to
resist the second dye.
31Dip dyeing the fabric in the second colour.
32After the second dyeing the fabric it is rinsed
in cold water.
33The ties are not removed until the fabric is
sold, to show that it is genuine bandhani.
