Connecticut Global Fuel Cell Center Seminar
Announcement
Seminar Topic Nano-crystalline Film and
Powder Processing at Missouri University of
Science and Technology Presented By Professor
Harlan U. Anderson, Electronic Materials
Applied Research Center (EMARC), Missouri
University of Science and Technology (MST)
Date Thursday April 2, 2009 Time 130 pm
Location CGFCC Conference Room Abstract
This presentation will review the techniques used
at MST to produce high purity oxides from organo
- metallics. The discussion will focus on the
production of nano-crystalline powders, dense and
porous thin films (lt0.5µm), dense and porous
thick films (0.5 to 20µm), zero shrinkage
fabrication of bulk ceramics, composites and
composition graded structured films. The ability
to understand and exploit these features requires
further development of the technology. For
example, the microstructure of the composite
electrodes can be optimized or the composition of
composite electrodes can be carefully selected in
order to decrease the electrode over potential
resulting from the gas diffusion process or from
the activation of electrochemical reactions,
respectively. Examples will be presented and the
advantages and disadvantages of the techniques
discussed. About the Author Professor
Harlan U. Anderson is Curators' Professor
Emeritus of Ceramic Engineering, Senior
Investigator Materials Research Center, and the
Director of Electronic Materials Applied Research
Center at Missouri University of Science and
Technology (formerly University of Missouri,
Rolla). He holds a PhD in Engineering Science
from University of California-Berkeley (1962).
His research interest includes Nonstoichiometry
of oxides sintering behavior of oxides and
metals electrical degradation of dielectrics
methods of preparing high purity oxides from
organo-metallics titanates for use as capacitors
and resistors corrosion of ceramics perovskites
and spinels for use as high temperature
electrodes, insulators and catalysts processing
of ceramic materials multi-layer substrates and
capacitors preparation of thin film oxides
sensors and thin film devices. Professor
Anderson is recipient of numerous awards and
honors including Fellow, American Ceramic
Society, 1979 Faculty Excellence Award,
1987 and 1988 Curators' Professor, December
1988 Editor, J. American Ceramic Society,
