2BREAK DOWN, 2001 Former CA store, Oxford
Street, London Michael Landy made an inventory
of everything he owned. Every item of furniture,
every book, every piece of food, every cat toy...
The list took three years to complete and it
contained 7,227 items. Then, with the help of a
large, bespoke machine and an overall-clad team
of operatives, he set about destroying it all.
After two weeks nothing but shredded or
granulated material remained.Landy's consumer
nightmare was displayed during a fourteen day
period of systematic de-construction.

4Selfridges explored the influence of Surrealism
on contemporary art and design with a series of
collaborations in its Oxford Street store.
Running in tandem with the Victoria and Albert
museums exhibition, Surreal Things Surrealism
and Design (29th March to 22nd July), Selfridges
commissions demonstrated the powerful effect the
movement continues to have on artists and
designers today.

8Artists have colonised a parade of disused shops
in Dursley, Gloucestershire where they sell their
paintings, photographs and ceramics. The flaking
window frames of a closed skateboard shop,
photography shop and an upholsterer have been
repainted and the displays given over to a
rotating gallery of 20 artists. Photograph

9The inaugural exhibition at Temporary Art Space
in Halifax, following on from the hugely
successful exhibition of the same name in
neighbouring Huddersfield. Fifteen artists will
exhibit painting, drawing, print, video,
sculpture and installation works, responding to
the broad theme of "temporary."
10Wasted Spaces is an international non-profit
organisation, transforming empty and unloved
spaces into exciting art experiences. Vacant shop
fronts and commercial windows become a platform
for young and emerging artists to showcase their
work. By making use of discarded space, art is
presented and appreciated by an entirely new
public who would not normally experience works of
this kind, and the traditional barriers between
art and the audience begin to be broken. Wasted
Spaces has recently received funding from Brent
Council to create several Wasted Spaces windows
in Brent.

redefine public and private in a shopping street.

Pollocks Worthless Seven Dials June
2009 Inspired by the recession and compelled to
create something positive, Worthless is a live
art installation that explores the value of
material objects in the heart of Seven Dials. For
one week only members of the public were invited
to bring their own worthless items into the
store, and have them transformed into pieces of
art.
