His Love and His Power

• How Gods Heart Moves His Hand

1 Corinthians 121-11

• Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do
  not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that
  when you were pagans you were led astray to mute
  idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I want
  you to understand that no one speaking in the
  Spirit of God ever says Jesus is accursed! and
  no one can say Jesus is Lord except in the Holy
  Spirit.

• 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same
  Spirit 5 and there are varieties of service, but
  the same Lord 6 and there are varieties of
  activities, but it is the same God who empowers
  them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the
  manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

  of wisdom, and to another the utterance of
  knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to
  another faith by the same Spirit, to another
  gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another
  the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to
  another the ability to distinguish

  another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All
  these are empowered by one and the same Spirit,
  who apportions to each one individually as he
  wills.

• If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels,
  but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a
  clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic
  powers, and understand all mysteries and all
  knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to
  remove mountains, but have not love, I am
  nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I
  deliver up my body to be burned,? but have not
  love, I gain nothing.

• 4 Love is patient and kind love does not envy
  or boast it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does
  not insist on its own way it is not irritable or
  resentful 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing,
  but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all
  things, believes all things, hopes all things,
  endures all things.

• 8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will
  pass away as for tongues, they will cease as
  for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know
  in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the
  perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11
  When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I
  thought like a child, I reasoned like a child.
  When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.

• Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test
  the spirits to see whether they are from God, for
  many false prophets have gone out into the world.
  2 By this you know the Spirit of God every
  spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come
  in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that
  does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is
  the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was
  coming and now is in the world already.

• 4 Little children, you are from God and have
  overcome them, for he who is in you is greater
  than he who is in the world. 5 They are from the
  world therefore they speak from the world, and
  the world listens to them. 6 We are from God.
  Whoever knows God listens to us whoever is not
  from God does not listen to us. By this we know
  the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

• 7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is
  from God, and whoever loves has been born of God
  and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does
  not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the
  love of God was made manifest among us, that God
  sent his only Son into the world, so that we
  might live through him. 10 In this is love, not
  that we have loved God but that he loved us and
  sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

• 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to
  love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God if
  we love one another, God abides in us and his
  love is perfected in us.

• We are not to be ignorant of spiritual things,
  but we are to be discerning know the source
• In Corinth, Paul contrasts real spiritual power
  with their former pagan practices
• John speaks to the church in what is now Turkey
  about the false prophets, false believers

• That which is of God affirms Christ / any thing
  that denies Christ is not from God
• By discernment we can be wise about what is truly
  of God and what is not and not ignorant

  (manifestation / phanerosis)
• In Pauls letter, it is the Holy Spirit showing
  through each believer in power
• In Johns letter is it the Father showing His
  love through Christ

• The key commonality is Gods heart of love for us
• It is the core of both passages
• Paul has to redirect the Corinthians away from
  just focusing on Gods power, His hand, back to
  His heart of love

The Central Issue

• We must focus on seeking Gods heart (His love
  for us and others) if we want to see His hand
  (power, miracles, etc)
• If our heart is full of His love for others we
  will speak His words with power and see lives
  change
• If we feel His compassion for the hurting, then
  we will be able to be His hands of healing

The Central Issue

• To be truly spiritual, and function in the power
  of the Holy Spirit, we must become truly loving
• When we know His love as expressed in Christ, and
  share His love, we are truly set free by His
  love, and we can know His truth. We can identify
  that which is of Him and that which is not
• When we have His heart, we can become His hands
