Scientists for the RAND Corporation have created
this model to describe how a home computer
could look like in the year 2004. However the
needed technology will not be economically
feasible for the average home. Also the
scientists readily admit that the computer will
require not yet invented technology to actually
work, but 50 years from now scientific progress
is expected to solve these problems. With
teletype interface and the Fortran language, the
computer will be easy to use.

9The Basics
What is HTML? HTML, Hypertext Markup Language, is
the language used for creating hypertext
documents on the World Wide Web and controlling
how Web pages appear. Describes the structure
of a page. Does not describe the page
layout Comes with a set of tags (headings,
paragraphs, lists etc) We also have XHML
Extensible Hypertext Markup Language extensions
to HTML. XMP eXtensible Markup Language
defines the structure of data. CSS Cascading
Style Sheets describes how a document is
displayed.
The good news You have to know any of
this! Unless of course you are a
masochist! WYSIWYG programs are available
FrontPage, Dreamweaver, etc Plus some providers
offer free web site creation tools These tools
create the HTML, XHTML. XMP CSS code for you.
10OK Lets Role Up Our Sleeves
- Before we look a one of these tools, lets look at
some raw HTML stuff - As well as HTML etc there is CGI/Perl/PHP etc
- These are called scripts and permit adding logic
into web page design. - We wont look at any these today
11What Do We Do Now?
- To make your web site available to the web you
have copy your files to a web server or publish
directly to the web server. - You can host your web site yourself unlikely
you would have to install something like Apache
plus do a lot of other things. - Most likely you would use the services of a web
hosting service - Many available check with Google
- Also provided by SHAW Cable, Telus, Islandnet etc
- Small free web sites provided with SHAW high
speed service Telus ADSL service - BUT before you do any of this you need a domain.
12What IS a Domain?
- It is what uniquely identifies your site e.g.
www.clydefoley.ca - It must be registered - and renewed annually/5
years/ 10 years - Cost for doing this
- Some domain hosting services offer free domain
registration for some of their offerings - e.g.
1AND1.com - Disadvantage You never own the domain when you
change the provider you have to acquire a new
domain this may not be a problem for personal
use, although you will loose your favorite domain
name, but is a problem for a business Why? - Confusion for clients and suppliers when the
domain name changes - Locked into a particular provider.
- A domain name is not required for SHAW or Telus
member services. - e.g. members.shaw.ca/cbfoley is the URL (woops
another new term)
13Final Steps To Publish Your Site
- Your domain is registered
- You have selected you domain service provider
- You now have to set up your site this can be a
little scary at first - Now you can move (or publish) your web site.
- You need an FTP (File Transfer Program) for that
- Provided with XP and IE (perhaps other browsers)
- Today we will use a free FTP program FTP995
- And will use the free web space provided with the
SHAW high speed service - If time permits we will quickly look at another
fee based service.
