Title: HARLEM RENAISSANCE
1HARLEM RENAISSANCE
2 African-American literature, art, music,and
dance began to flourish in Harlem in the 1920s.
This African-American cultural revival is known
as the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem
Renaissance encouraged African Americans to
celebrate their heritage.
3The Harlem Renaissance was a time of
African-American cultural expression. This
explosion was helped and encouraged by wealthy
patrons of art and more specifically, the Harmon
Foundation. White Americans began to take notice
of the many talents of black Americans for the
first time. The Harlem Renaissance helped to
eliminate some racist stereotypes through unique
music, dance, literature and art.
4 White-owned publishing companies began to
publish books by black authors. Black figures
were now being depicted in American art. Black
musicians played to white audiences. Jazz and
blues became very popular during the Harlem
Renaissance. African-American plays, poetry,
fiction, and essays were produced at a high rate.
The Harlem Renaissance was about being proud to
be African-American.

8 Dream Deferred What happens to a dream
deferred? Does it dry up Like a raisin in the
sun? Or fester like a sore-- And then run? Does
it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar
over-- like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just
sags like a heavy load. Or does it
explode? Langston Hughes
9It all started at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem,
1926.
The Lindy Hop became popular during the Harlem
Renaissance.. Some of the biggest Big Bands in
the Northeast played at the Savoy Ballroom in
Harlem. Saturday night competitions at the
ballroom helped to promote the new dance craze
and encouraged good dancers to raise the bar.
New steps were created every day. Those who were
not dancers loved to watch others perform the
movements. The Lindy Hop became the dance to
do. The Lindy Hop later became known as the
Jitterbug. It was also known as the West Coast
Swing, Rock'n'Roll, and the Boogie Woogie.
