The Richland Public Library
  • (RPL) Foundation and Friends of the Richland
Public Library sponsored Library After Dark
from noon to midnight on October 7th 8th to
raise money to help keep the library open on
Sundays. Due to budget cuts, the library has
been closed on Sundays since Feb 13th 2005,
except for four Sundays in late May and early
June, following a 2,000 donation from local
businessman Tim Bush. The event which was free
to the public included, a Richland Police bomb
squad, yoyos, dogs, slide shows, crafts and sumo
wrestlers. Although all activities were free,
the Foundation had individuals to read stories at
    30-minutes intervals. Each reader gathered
pledges of 500, the actual cost of keeping the
    library open on one Sunday.
  • Full library service was available until Midnight
on both days. Contributions to the Foundation
    are fully tax deductible.

Fundraiser Big Success
  • Community members supported the Richland Public
Library with their financial gifts. The
foundation collected more than 9,400, with at
least an additional 1000 in pledges, to reopen
the library on Sundays. That amount will keep
the library open on Sundays until March 12th,
2006. Six individuals each contributed 500, the
cost of operating for one Sunday. The Library
held a grand reopening of its Sunday hours on
Oct. 23, thanks to the American Chemical Society.
  • The city council authorized city staff to find
money in the municipal budget to keep the library
open on Sundays throughout the remainder of 2006
based on the strong show of community support.
