5th Grade Curriculum
  • Language Arts Overview
  • Students participate in a balanced literacy
    program that includes 5 components
  • Guided Reading small group instruction with
    students reading same text.

  • Shared Reading modeled reading to expand
    students literacy understanding
  • Independent Reading students read texts
    individually, selecting own text
  • Interactive Reading (Making Meaning)
  • a variety of texts are read aloud with
    teachers periodically pausing for discussions to
    demonstrate how readers think

  • Word Study (Words Their Way) a conceptual
    approach to instruction in phonics, spelling,
    word recognition, and vocabulary. Spelling
    tests will be given every other Thursday.
    Students will have two weeks to work with their
    words.

Independent Reading Homework
  • Each student will be expected to read a
    minimum of 30 minutes a day 5 days a week.
    Book titles and a parent signature are to be
    recorded on the monthly calendar in the students
    assignment calendar. Books Shares will be given
  • once per marking period.

Writing
  • Students will write for a variety of purposes
    throughout the content areas. Teachers will work
    to assess the students writing using the
    Developing Writers Assessment (DWA). This
    assessment tool will help guide the writing
    instruction throughout the year.

Math
  • Students will be taught the Every Day Math
    Program
  • Study Links will be sent home by Unit. They are
    expected to be turned in by the Due Date to
    receive an A. Every day they are late their
    grade will be lowered by one grade per day. Also
    a grade will be given reflecting their work.
  • The day after the Study Links are due is the Unit
    Test. There will be a review at 730 a.m. the
    day of the Unit Tests for any student who wishes
    to attend.
  • Benchmark Tests will be given every two units.
  • Daily work in Journals and/or other math papers
    with a on are counting scores. They may be
    redone for a new grade.

Camp
  • Camp for Oakley Park will be Wednesday, April 1st
    Friday, April 3rd.
  • Camp Information Night will be held some time in
    March. More information will follow.
  • Cost of camp this year is approximately 125.
