Title: FIRST OFF: Majors, minors and concentrations

1
FIRST OFF Majors, minors and concentrations
Major -- focused area, lots of courses (about
12) Minor -- not so focused, almost a lot of
courses (about 8) Concentration -- getting
exposed to area (about 4 courses)
WHATS NEEDED? -- there are three options
Two majors OR One major, one minor, and one
concentration OR One major and three
concentrations
(notice how they all add up to 24 courses?)
2
SECOND WHAT DO BIOLOGY MAJORS DO?
There are three answers
DOUBLE MAJOR usually Chemistry is second major
ONE MAJOR, ONE MINOR, ONE CONCENTRATION usually
the Chemistry minor, and the concentration is
automatic (Physical Science)
ONE MAJOR, THREE CONCENTRATIONS doing the
Biology support courses automatically gives a
Chem conc., a Phys. Sci. conc. another
non-science conc. must be found
3
THIRD What to do besides major, minors, and
concentrations?

128 credits needed for graduation
4
FOURTH WHAT TO ACTUALLY DO?
MAJOR COURSEWORK
SUPPORT COURSEWORK
CHEM 121 (Fall) PHYS 203 (Fall) CHEM 122
(Spring) PHYS 204 (Spring) CHEM 240 (Spring) MATH
240 or PSY 241(both semesters) It is best to take
CHEM 121/122 in your freshman year and PHYS
203/204 in your sophomore year.
BIOL 150, 154 (Fall) BIOL 151 (Spring)
BIOL 215, 250 (Spring)
BIOL 300-400s
Choose 1 from each area (MC, ORG, POP), five in
total, at least one course in each area offered
every semester
BIOL electives (2 courses)
And General Education coursework
5
For the (usual) Chemistry minor Ignore CHEM 240
and take
CHEM 121 (Fall) CHEM 122 (Spring) CHEM 341
(Fall) CHEM 342 (Spring) CHEM 481,480L
(Fall) CHEM 230 (Fall)
To get Chemistry as a second major See a chem
advisor asap!
6
Just doing the SUPPORT COURSEWORK for the Biology
major scores you --a concentration in
Chemistry (CHEM 121, 122, 240) and --a
concentration in Physical Science (12 credits
from CHEM or PHYS)
7
GENERAL EDUCATION COURSEWORK
pp. 26-28, 2008-2010 College Catalog
-- While the science courses cover the General
Education coursework, they are not to be counted
twice. This means that essentially a Biology
student only takes 30 actual GenEd credits. As
an advisor or student, the best strategy is
simply to ignore area 6, and consider that one
needs 30 credits of General Education. Remember
that the total credit number must sum to 128
credits. See the next slide.
8
Diversity coursework requirement
pp. 28, College Catalog
You must complete at least six (6) credits
(basically two courses) in courses designated as
Diversity Courses
Three (3) credits (basically one course) must
come from the GenEd coursework The other three
(3) will come from within your major coursework,
i.e., see http//www.minotstateu.edu/academic/co
m43.shtml for the list of eligible courses.
KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS LIST WILL GROW!!!
9
So...
128 credits needed for graduation
10
A list of tricky stuff MATH 240 requires MATH
103 as a prerequisite CHEM 121 requires MATH 103
as a co-requisite So, MATH 103 is required
despite it not being listed anywhere. Students
can come with Dual Credit coursework this
means they took a college course in high
school. It also means theyve received college
credit for it already. (In actuality, they dont
get an adequate college course in their high
schools) Students ACT math scores dictate where
they begin in the MATH courses. Some students
are ready for MATH 103 or higher some are not.
Trust these scores. If a student cant enroll in
MATH 103, then enrollment in CHEM 121 cant
happen either. The math program also offers a
placement exam, but without it they use the math
ACT scores. A student may choose to try the exam
to be placed higher than the ACT score suggests.
They take this exam when they come for first
registration. Remember the diversity stuff.
