Tips for Healthy Eating in University
2
  • There are two main factors when it comes to
eating at university your meals need to be
healthy and the ingredients should be
inexpensive. Initially, you may find it
challenging to meet this criteria, especially if
you are used to your parents cooking. However,
meal preparation is a critical skill and its
important to learn it as soon as possible. There
are a few things you can do to ensure that you
eat a balanced diet without spending too much.

3
Create a Budget and Stick to It
  • Figure out how much you can afford to spend on
food and never spend more than that amount. For
the first few weeks, your budget will need to be
slightly higher, as youll need to fill your
cupboards with the essentials. In this period, it
is crucial to be smart about what you buy stock
up on things that will last.

4
Write a List
  • Before you head to the store, write a list of
what you need. It may be tempting to throw
appealing items into your cart (especially things
on special offer), but you risk using up your
    budget on unhealthy treats.

5
Research Recipes
  • If you lack cooking experience, teach yourself
with simple recipes. You can search for a
particular dish that you want to prepare or buy
ingredients you want to include. As there are
almost always alternatives to every recipe, you
should look for the healthiest option with the
    least expensive ingredients.

6
Buy Plenty of Vegetables
  • The key to a healthy diet is plenty of fruits
and vegetables. If theres a market near you,
head there to pick up produce to save money. The
late afternoon is the best time to go, as you can
often find discounts sellers may also be
willing to reduce prices if you tell them that
    youre a student.

7
Cook with Friends
  • Taking turns to cook meals with roommates is a
great way to reduce the amount of time you spend
in the kitchen. Plus, as each of you will have
specific skills, youll be less likely to eat the
    same dishes every day.
  • Its much easier to eat well when youre living
in off-campus student housing with adequate
facilities to prepare your meals. If youre
looking for rooms for rent in Hamilton students
needn't look any further than West Village
    Suites.

  • When you rent a suite, you receive a full-sized
kitchen. Better still, the housing has easy
access to downtown Hamilton, where you can
purchase all the food you need.
