IMPACT OF FV ROADMAPPING ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF
LOW CARBON POWERTRAINS
  • Innovate 2006
  • 2nd November 2006

3
Heading towards attractive and profitable low
carbon vehicles
  • Summary
  • a continuous process generating a
    future-orientated sector
  • FV Roadmap V1 The map 2002
  • FV Roadmap V2 The destinations 2004
  • Cenex (via LowCVP) R, D D Priorities 2004/5
  • FV Thematic Groups Projects and partners 2005/6

4
R D D Priorities
  • In anticipation of Cenex and its KTN, a sub-group
of the LowCVP RD WG defined the research,
development and demonstration priorities for the
    automotive sector in the UK
  • By identifying the key technologies currently
seen as the most likely to contribute to the
reduction of road transport CO2 emissions
  • By understanding the current UK state-of-the-art
    in each of them
  • By prioritising the technologies that would best
benefit from increased research intensity, taking
    account of-
  • CO2 reduction potential
  • Time to market and attractiveness to the consumer
  • Commercial benefit to the UK (exports, inward
    investment, IP exploitation)

5
Projects and partners (work-in-progress)
  • Two Thematic Groups of Foresight Vehicle, namely
Engine and Powertrain (EPT) and Hybrid, Electric
    and Alternatively-fuelled Vehicles (HEAFV) joined
forces to identify the priority topics on which
members and others wish to collaborate.
  • The Cenex RDD document was a primary reference
  • Other documents include the ERTRAC SRA (no major
    inconsistencies)
  • The planned technology trajectories of the
participating companies are the defining factors
  • Document prepared justifying investment in low
CO2 RD at UK automotive companies
  • National and European programmes are targeted (eg
    DTI TP and FP7)
  • Engaging with European sectoral groups

6
IMPACT OF FV ROADMAPS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOW
CARBON POWERTRAINS
  • CONCLUSIONS
  • Roadmapping is a continuous process with several
    distinct targets
  • The details of the resulting maps seem less
important than the creation of a future-aware
community with an agenda for action
  • A strengthened appetite for collaborative
national and European RTD is evident in the low
    carbon powertrain community
