After receiving payment information from the
PAC over an SSL connection, Polaris software
uses the VeriSign Payflow Pro API to establish
a second secure SSL connection to the VeriSign
payment gateway. The credit information is then
passed to the VeriSign payment gateway.
VeriSign securely routes the transaction
through the financial network to the appropriate
bank, ensuring that your patrons are authorized
to make this payment. The whole transaction is
accomplished in a matter of seconds and is
immediately settled (approved or declined). No
overnight batch processing is required in
Polaris. If the payment is approved, the
patrons library account is credited
immediately.

No credit card numbers are stored in the
patron record or with the patron account. The
patron account retains only the charge and
payment data (amount, dates, reason for charge
and payment method), as it does for any other
transaction. Polaris stores only a series of Xs
and the last 4 digits in the ILSStoreTransactions
database table, used to track card
transactions.

- An e-merchant account for online payment is
required and the only option currently is
VeriSign Payflow Pro. - (Payflow Link account is different and will not
work) - If you already have a merchant account, the
e-merchant account is still needed for
integration with Polaris. - When the account is established, the bank will
provide an account name, password, and server
information necessary for Polaris System
Administration. When the connection information
is entered in Polaris and your bank account is
activated, you are ready to go.

- A processing fee is charged for each
transaction the amount varies with each
financial institution. Additional e-merchant
account charges may include a one-time setup fee,
monthly maintenance, and/or a tech support fee. - (For this reason you will probably want to set a
minimum payment threshold.) - The organization that takes the payment is
charged the processing fee. In the staff client
or at a Polaris ExpressCheck workstation, the
organization is the workstations branch. In PAC,
the organization is the patrons branch. The
library responsible for the e-merchant account
will get monthly bills and statements from the
credit card agency.

- When multiple branches are involved, each
payment is associated with the original charge
and the charging organization. - E.G. the patron may owe 10 fines at two
different branches, 20 total. If the patron pays
the total amount with a credit card, there will
be a single 20 charge on the patrons card.
However, in Polaris you will see a 10 charge and
a 10 payment at branch A and a 10 charge and a
10 payment at branch B. - Note The organization responsible for the charge
is a matter of policy set in Polaris
Administration an overdue fine may be charged by
the patron's branch, the items branch, or the
check-out branch.

After you establish a merchant account you can
use a test server provided by VeriSign to test
credit card payments. You must use a test
credit card number, which Polaris Library
Systems can supply. The test will update
Polaris data but no actual charges or payments
will be processed. Contact your Polaris Site
Manager for details on setting up a test.
