What is a pre-policy medical checkup?
  • A pre-policy medical checkup is a pre-policy
    issuance procedure that a health insurance seeker
    is required to undergo before getting a policy
    issued by the insurance company.
  • Individuals above a certain age say age of 40 and
    above are required to undergo a medical test
    before buying the policy.
  • Few health insurers do not require you to undergo
    any medical test at all.
  • Insurers also ask applicants to get a medical
    check-up done, if they go for a higher coverage
    amount.

Why is a pre policy medical checkup important?
  • Getting a pre-policy check up done provides an
    element of certainty to the insurance company.
  • Insurers get an idea about any pre-existing
    diseases that the applicant is suffering from.

What are the medical tests that are conducted?
  • Usually, an applicant has to undergo medical
    tests such as blood sugar, blood pressure,
    complete blood count, ECG, routine urine
    analysis, lipid profile test, blood serum test,
    etc.
  • Also, depending on your age and coverage amount,
    your insurer may ask you to undergo several other
    tests too as they have a grid pattern that
    specified the number of tests to be conducted.

Who bears the cost of the medical examination?
  • As per the Insurance Regulatory and Development
    Authority of India (IRDAI), 50 cost of the
    medical checkup is to be borne by the insurance
    company.
  • Few insurance companies also let you avail free
    medical checkup.

  • The test reports are sent to the underwriting
    department of the insurance company for review.
  • If any ailment is not deducted, then the policy
    is issued to the applicant at normal premium
    rates.
  • If an ailment is deducted then the following
