INTRODUCTION
Water heaters are a daily necessity and
without proper maintenance, you may face
several issues. Installing a new water heater
is also a costly investment. Here we will
share a few basic troubleshooting ideas that
can help you save some money from buying a
new system or calling a serviceman for
repairing. However, it should be kept
in mind that repairing a gas water heater
should be done with caution as they can
explode. Make sure to turn off the gas
before taking any attempt to repair!

NO HOT WATER
You may face the problem that your gas
water heater is not producing any hot water.
Firstly, we suggest you check the pilot
light if it is on. Also, make sure that
the gas valve is properly functioning. The
gas valve provides gas to the main burner
and the pilot light. The gas valve will
shut off the gas supply if the pilot is
not lit which will hinder the production of
hot water. In case the gas valve is not
operating, replacing it will be the only
option.
4
WATER TOO HOT
Sometimes water gets heated quickly and the
most likely reason for this is the
thermostat. A thermostat is part of the gas
valve and helps to adjust the temperature
of the water. Unfortunately, a thermostat
can not be repaired if not working. You
will need to replace the thermostat with
the entire gas valve.

BLACK OR RUSTY WATER
Black or rusty colored water is the cause
of dissolved anode. The anode rod is an
important part of your water heater.
It consists of metal which oxidizes in place
of the steel in your tank. Thus it helps
to prevent any leak in the tank. When
the metal gets dissolved, the water turns
black or rusty as the tank starts to rust.
Try replacing the anode rod with a new one
to solve the issue. The usual life of an
anode rod is about 5 years.

PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE LEAKING
The pressure relief valve usually doesn't
leak much. However, if there is any leak
then it may be due to either high
pressure in the tank or a defective valve
which vents water. Also, check for any
sediments to have
settled in the valve. If the valve is will
stop functioning. Check the
not seated properly, it following issues and
if
the valve continues to leak then you may
have to replace
it with a new one. Replacing the valve is
however not
too costly and can be done in an hour.

HOT WATER TANK LEAKING
  • Leaking hot water tank can sometimes turn
out to be a big problem. Leaks can be
found in 4 possible spots, the water lines,
the pressure relief valve, the drain valve,
and the tank itself. Leaks near the bottom
of the tank are generally due to the drain
valves while leaks at the top occur from
    the pressure relief valve.
  • A water line leak may be due to too much
pressure of the cold water supply and hot
    water outlet line.
  • Condensation at the top of the water
heater can be another cause of leaking.
