EndNote and Reference Manager
  • The two most popular packages from ISI
    ResearchSoft
  • Introduce a high level of flexibility and
    functionality to the bibliographic management
    process
  • The standard features of these packages are

4
  • A reference database
  • Specialising in storing, managing and searching
for bibliographic references and images in your
    private reference library.
  • An online search tool
  • Providing a simple way to search online
    bibliographic databases and retrieve the
references directly into the software without
    having to type.
  • A bibliography/figure list maker
  • Build lists of cited works and figures
automatically. Use these packages to insert
citations/figures into Word documents to create
bibliographies (and figure lists in EndNote 6).

5
Features specific to EndNote 6
  • Use Microsoft Word templates to construct your
    manuscript
  • These guide you through the exact publisher
    requirements for specific journals.
  • Organise images and files
  • Insert any type of generic image (e.g. BMP, JPEG)
or application file (e.g. MS Excel or Access)
along with your text reference using the new
    image and caption fields.

6
  • Access images and create a figure list
    automatically
  • Locate citations and figures in Word with Cite
While You Write bibliography and figure list
appear as you insert into a manuscript.
  • Export references from a travelling library
  • EndNotes unique travelling libraries store all
reference data in your Word document. So you can
    export references directly from collaborative
papers to view and store in your own EndNote
    library.

7
New for EndNote 7
  • Subject Bibliographies
  • Users will be able to create customised Subject
Bibliographies - reference lists that group
    records by a selected field(s).
  • RTF Document Scan
  • Generate bibliographies and format citations with
.txt and .rtf files. Users are no longer tied to
    Microsoft Word.
  • Figure and Table Placement
  • Users can control the placement of figures and
tables in-text or as lists at the end of a
    document.

8
  • Data Visualisation integration Windows only
  • Export EndNote records to data visualisation
tools such as OmniViz and Reference Visualizer.
Used in conjunction with EndNote it will
streamline the research and document analysis
    process.
  • XML Import and Export
  • Features for importing and exporting in XML
format to allow for easier use of text in various
applications and on the World Wide Web.
  • Palm OS compatability
  • EndNote 7 enables direct, synchronisation between
a designated EndNote 7 database and a Palm OS
    device.

9
Features specific to Reference Manager 10
  • The Network package
  • Connect workgroup activities using the unique
    network edition which allows simultaneous
    read/write access to databases.
  • Collaborate with colleagues easily
  • Collaborate easily with a travelling library of
cited references that follows the Word document
    everywhere you send it.
  • Unlimited database size
  • Store an entire careers worth of references in
    one place.

10
  • Store links to other resources
  • Such as full-text articles, PDF files, related
links, and images in dedicated fields
  • Data Visualisation integration
  • Export Reference Manager records to data
visualisation tools such as OmniViz and Reference
Visualizer. Used in conjunction with Reference
Manager it will streamline the research and
    document analysis process.
  • OpenURL-linking
  • Users will have access to a host of related,
virtual links that allow them to easily navigate
    between independently supported online databases
    at the document level.

11
Where next for Reference Manager?
  • Reference Manager 11 is planned for 2004.
  • Some of the new and popular features from EndNote
will probably move into Reference Manager
although it will always be the Network package.

12
Document analysis and visualisation software
  • RefViz
  • Organise, analyse, and investigate the huge
amounts of literature available to researchers
    today.
  • Documents are organised by thematic content and
presented in graphics, allowing you to identify
major themes and focus in on areas of interest.
  • It can be used to create overviews of
    bibliographic databases and literature search
results from Reference Manager or EndNote.
  • Available later in 2003

13
  • Reference Web Poster
  • ISI ResearchSoft hope to relaunch this product in
the next 12 months, however, no other information
    is currently known.
  • ProCite
  • ISI ResearchSoft plan to continue selling ProCite
for as long as people want to purchase it
  • WriteNote
  • A web-based package aimed at undergraduates
currently being introduced into a number of UK
    Universities

14
Possible trends
  • Although EndNote and Reference Manager are likely
to contain similar features they are still
separate packages with their own advantages and
    user-base.
  • More tools (like RefViz) to help users search
their databases to look for information.
  • More products to help people get involved in
referencing at an earlier stage (WriteNote).
  • Continuous development of web-based packages as
    technology moves forward.
