  • NLH Healthcare Databases Simple Search

Created by Jane Tatlow as part of the NLH Search

2
Go to the NLH Homepage www.library.nhs.uk and
select the Healthcare Databases link. Currently
labelled Books Journals and Healthcare Databases
3
You must log in with a valid NHS Athens ID to
search the full range of databases. The next few
slides look at what is available without an NHS
Athens ID, as shown. Later slides look at what
is available with a NHS Athens username.
4
Links to My Journals and E-books
  • Below the list of databases you will also find
    links to
  • My Journals, with links to national and local
journals relevant to your NHS area.
  • E-books linking to the national collection of
online books. Future developments should also
include local collections of online books
  • Links to resources useful for critically
    appraising research articles.

5
Select a search option (title or title and text).
Type in a keyword or phrase
Finally select SEARCH
6
Without the authority of your NHS Athens ID, this
Simple Search will only search for results from
Biomed Central and the PubMed databases. There
will be no links to online article content.
Future developments may enable access to free
open access articles.
7
  • PubmedPubMed is a service of the U.S. National
Library of Medicine that includes over 16 million
citations from MEDLINE and other life science
journals for biomedical articles back to the
    1950s.
  • BioMed CentralIncludes records from over 40 open
    access, peer-reviewed electronic journals
covering the whole of biology and medicine.

8
The number of records found and your search
statement is displayed above the results.
Each result is displayed with a brief reference
including the original source database.
Selecting More detail or the title will display
further information. (Save result will prompt you
for an NHS Athens ID.)
9
In More details, PubMed records will include an
abstract. Biomed Central records do not include
abstracts.
More details includes a simple form enabling you
to email the details to yourself or a colleague.
10
To run another search type another keyword or
phrase into the Start a new search box, then
select SEARCH. Or use the link to Search
Resources to start again.
11

Databases and to make use of extra features like

    with your NHS Athens ID

13

with your NHS Athens.
14
If you log in with an NHS Athens username and
password, a Simple Search Healthcare Databases
will retrieve results from
  • National healthcare databases, Cinahl, EMBASE,
    HMIC, AMED, PsycINFO and BNI.
  • Medline from PubMed
  • BioMed Central
  • Online articles from electronic journal
collections purchased by the NHS nationally and
    locally.
  • Where the NHS has access to article
content this will be linked to your results

15
Once you have logged on with your Athens
username, select Healthcare Databases.
16
Your NHS Athens ID will give you access to seven
health related databases
  • Allied and Complementary Medicine (AMED)
    1985-Covers occupational therapy, physiotherapy,
    rehabilitation, plus alternative and
    complementary medicine acupuncture,
    chiropractic, homeopathy, yoga, hypnosis.
  • British Nursing Index (BNI) 1994- This UK
focused database covers general nursing as well
as the specific nursing areas covering AE,
    neonatal, breast cancer, theatres and
    orthopaedics.
  • Cumulative Index of Nursing Allied Health
(CINAHL) 1982-A US database covering all aspects
of nursing and allied health. Subjects covered
    include optometry, radiologic technology, speech
    and language pathology, nutrition. Contains
    journals, theses and pamphlets.
  • EMBASE 1974-With particular emphasis on
European sources, this database covers the whole
field of medicine. Drugs, pharmacology and
substance abuse are particularly well covered. .
  • HMIC Health Management Information Consortium
1979-This compiles data from both the Department
of Health Library and Information Services and
Kings Fund Information and Library Service.
  • MEDLINE 1950-At this level of search Medline
will be from PubMed. This is a large US source of
    medical information. Other subjects include
    dentistry, veterinary medicine, medical
    psychology, genetics and advanced nursing
    practice.
  • PsycINFO 1806-Includes international coverage of
literature on Psychology and allied fields

17
To do a Simple Search across all the databases
type your query topics into the search box and
use Select All. Then click on SEARCH
NOTE You are Searching PubMed in this Simple
Search
18
  • Typing two words will retrieve results that
contain both words. Entering cbt depression will
retrieve the same results as entering cbt AND
    depression.
  • Phrases should be entered within double quotes
    for example, cognitive behaviour therapy
  • You may also use the combine function OR to
search for alternative words. Some examples are
    pediatric OR paediatricstroke OR cva
  • NOT is also available but should be used with
caution. For example diabetes NOT adult would
exclude articles that were about clinical trials
involving both adults and children, not just
    those involving adults.

19
Results appear as earlier with the addition of
Full Text links. Selecting the full text link
will display a free online copy of the article to
read, save or print. You may be prompted for your
NHS Athens again.
20
  • There are over 1000 online journals available to
NHS staff which have been purchased by NHS
England. Local health library services have added
to this total. This includes many top titles such
as JAMA and British Medical Journal.
  • Your NHS Athens username and password is the key
to accessing these journals and articles.
  • Direct access to a searchable index is available
    via My Journals, http//journals.library.nhs.uk
or from the link on the NLH homepage

21
For more complex searching we recommend the
Healthcare Databases Advanced Search. Use the
links illustrated below on the results page or
the home page
22
TroubleshootingIf you run a search but dont
find what you are looking for
  • If you searched for keywords just in the title
and retrieved too few results, try running it
    again using Title and text
  • If you want to search for a particular phrase use
    double-quote marks eg primary care.
  • Think about using similar or alternative terms.
Use OR in capital letters to combine your terms,
e.g. stroke OR cerebral vascular accident.
  • Think about american/british spellings eg.
    pediatric OR paediatric.
  • Focus your search results by using AND, e.g.
(panic attack OR anxiety OR stress) AND (CBT OR
cognitive behaviour therapy). Remember to use
    brackets to group similar concepts.
  • Use the wildcard symbol to find groups of
words, for example nurs will find nurse, nurses,
    nursing and nurse-led.
